Hello friends

Am a lover of food and seeing this challenge drew my attention. Food is a necessity to life and street food helps us out in our daily busy schedules.

What kind of street food is available in your city or area?

Food is very essential to life, imagine a world without food? Street food may not serve it better than we do in our homes but they sure saves us some time and energy. Sometimes I even call these streets food by the name fast food.

In my country and city, there are several kinds of street food available ranging from;

  • Spaghetti joints,
  • Noodles,
  • African salad,
  • Bread and Akara(beans cake),
  • Tea and coffee joints,
  • Shawarma stand,
  • Barbeque fish joints,
  • Pop corn,
  • Snacks stand,
  • Rice and stew joints
    and many more.

We see street food as one of the fastest means to get our tummy filled up with energy, food and vitality for the day.

I know families that these streets food has helped a great deal. For instance, a neighbor of mine in my formal apartment, she works in a bank and usually leaves for work as early as 4am in order to beat traffic while her husband leaves the house by 6:30am. Her husbands drops the children off to school before leaving for his work but before then, he must patronize a particular street food vendor just to get breakfast and lunch for his kids. This has been on for the past 5 years.

In my area Street food offers us opportunity to explore several kinds of meals, enjoy their flavors. It may come as appetizers, snack or complete meal. When am coming home sometimes I usually branch at a particular joint to purchase cooked corn and pea I guess you have not tried it before. It's like an appetizer even though it's ends up filling my tummy for hours.

Have you eaten these foods yourself? Show their taste and price in pictures+videos

Oh yes I have eaten these street food many times, even though I prefer to eat a proper meal at home, I still love to patronize snacks, popcorn, barbecue fish and chicken.

I enjoy several street food like bread and Akara ( beans cake), boiled and roasted corn, Shawarma and many more snacks they all tasted great. I prefer street food because it's seem less expensive.

My Contact with mr Moses

I was opportune to meet one of my street food customers. Guess what? He is a man. His name is Mr Moses. He is a hard working married man with 3 kids. He owns a street food stand inside bariga market in the city of lagos.

When I first met Mr Moses, he does POS business on this particular stand. I thought the business was doing well because I always go to his place to withdraw money from my account instead of going to the bank only for me to pass by his stand one day and discovered he has moved into another line of business of frying Akara(beans cake) and bread.

His new business the sells of Fried Akara(beans cake), fried potatoes and fresh bread got surprised and decided to ask him why the new decision. He told me that he decided to do this new business because the other one was struggling, he said sometimes he doesn't have cash to give to his customers and when he goes to the bank to collect cash needed for his business, the banks ask him to pay for the money. He says he buys money with money.

That was when he told me he has a wife and three kids to feed so he can't stay idle. He said this new business is far better although it's stressful for him. He says his wife helps him most times with washing of the beans and pealing it off and grinding it. He says he mixes the ingredients together and fries it himself.

He fries this stuff and sells it along with bread, this type of bread is called agege bread, only common in this part of the city. He orders the bread from a local bakery, he doesn't bake it himself. He still maintains his post business although he focuses more on this ne business.

I asked him if he is not shy doing a business popularly known to be done by women? He said as long as it puts food in his table and money in his pocket he doesn't mind doing it. I was amazed. He told me the business is not easy because it has to do with fire, frying and frying

His business starts as early as 6am and closes at 8am from Mondays to Saturdays. He says he uses Sundays to rest, wash up and prepare for the week. But guess what? He still does this business along side his POS business.

What did you learn about the shopkeeper's Struggle?

The shopper is determined to keep pushing. Engaging in more than one business. I have learnt persistency and diversification from this man.

I have also leant that there is no reason or room for excuses only possibilities. One more thing I have learnt from his struggles is partnership and division of labour. His wife helps out in processing the beans used for the Akara while he focuses on frying the Akara and potatoes that's division of labour.

He orders break from a local bakery, he doesn't need to go there every day, they bring it to him at a cheap rate. That's partnership. He has partnered with them, which is not only saving him time but money too.

Generally I have leant that challenges in business will always come but the way you handle it will tell if the business will grow or close up.

What do you think about the importance of these small street food businesses in our society?

The importance of small street business can not be over emphasis in our society. Like I said earlier, small street business has been saving lives especially my story about the couple I talked about that doesn't have time to make a decent breakfast and lunch for their children, the husband buys from street vendors to feed his kids.

Small street business has created an atmosphere where people meet and greet, discussing matters that bothers them which has in turn created inter personal relationship amongst people. For instance aside having mr Moses as my customer, we have been able to build familiarity or friendship not just with him but with people that regularly visit to buy things from him.

Street business has also added to the economic growth of our society through the paying of tax and other bills inclusive. You will never know how much they contribute until you find out.

Small street business in time past has been a source and avenue for creating more jobs especially in the city where I live. There are many vendors who have expanded and employed the services of other people to join them either either in the area of plate washing, serving the customers, preparation of the food and other aspects. This has helped in taking out many unemployed out of the street. It's is far better to do something than not to try at all..

Would like to invite my friends @sahmie @eveetim @josepha
