Sense from the Juma Festival

Every religion has its own festival. Similarly, the weekly Friday of Muslims is declared as a festival day. On this day, Muslims rush to the mosque in good attire. Festivals are not only an occasion of joy in rural and urban life of Bangladesh, but also an important aspect of religious and social bonding. Especially around Friday prayers, small fairs are held in many places, where people gather in large numbers in various shops. These shops are not only businesses, but also one of the means of preserving religious traditions and culture. In my area too, after Friday prayers, a small festive atmosphere is created next to the mosque. There are especially perfume, hat and miswak shops, which meet the religious and cultural needs of the people. This is discussed in detail below.

What are the Festival-centric businesses in your area?

Festival-centric business shop

In my area, a special festive atmosphere is created around Friday prayers. Every Friday after prayers, small shops are set up in front of and around the mosque. These shops are mainly decorated with religious items. In particular, perfume, hats and miswak shops are the main ones here. Perfume shops offer various types of fragrances, the sweet scent of ganja, musk or resinous gandha fills the surroundings. The price of this perfume, arranged in small glass bottles, is within the reach of the common man. On the other hand, hat shops sell hats of different colors and designs. Small ones for children and beautifully embroidered hats for adults easily catch the eye. Again, miswak shops sell various types of miswak for cleaning teeth, which are important from a religious point of view and are also beneficial from a health point of view.

Have you ever bought anything from these stores? Show pictures + videos and show their prices.

I personally have not bought anything from these shops yet. However, I have talked to the shopkeepers and found out the prices of their products. I also stood in front of the shop for quite some time. Then I saw that those who had come for prayers were buying their necessary supplies. Most of the people were there to buy perfume. Some had come to the mosque without their hats, so they were buying beautiful hats from the shop on the side of the road. I talked to the shopkeeper. And I got to know about his business. I also heard the prices of almost every item in the shop.Below are pictures of some items along with their prices

These products are priced differently because they are from different companies. For example, small bottles of perfume are usually available between 100 and 150 taka, medium bottles between 200 and 500 taka. The price of hats fluctuates between 50 and 250 taka depending on the quality and design. And meswaks are easily available between 40 and 50 taka each. Since all the products in these shops are affordable, many people come to buy them during Friday prayers.

I recorded a video of that shop on my phone. This is that video.

Why are people more attracted to street stalls during festivals?

1000053049.jpg

There are some social and psychological reasons why people are more attracted to these street shops during festivals. First, the prices are relatively low, so the common man can buy easily. Second, after coming out of the mosque after prayers and seeing so many shops at once, people naturally feel the desire to buy. Third, there is a special joy in shopping in a festive atmosphere, which attracts people even more. Especially the smell of perfume, the colorful design of the hat and the benefits of the miswak quickly attract people's minds.

Are these businesses contributing to preserving local culture?

These businesses are not limited to just selling products, but are also making a special contribution to preserving local culture and heritage. The use of perfume is an essential part of Islamic tradition, which is still alive in society. The hat is not only a symbol of modesty during prayer, but also part of the Muslim identity. And the use of miswak is the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which has been passed down from generation to generation. As a result, these shops are passing on local culture and religious values from generation to generation. At the same time, these small businesses are providing a livelihood for local shopkeepers, which is also significant from the economic point of view of the society.

My own picture

All in all, the perfume, hat, and miswak shops in my area, centered around Friday prayers, are not just businesses; rather, they are an important means of preserving people's religious affiliations, culture, and strengthening social bonds. Such festive businesses are sustaining religious values in our society and spreading them from generation to generation.
