What is Godfatherism?

Getting a position or an offer, which most times is not merited, but rather because a person has a backer in higher places or authorities. Such a person backing you up to get such a position is called a Godfather in this contest. The receiver of this favour remains loyal to them. With the play of Godfatherism, everything is easy to get with his influence.

Godfatherism is seen more in political settings. The Godfathers control most affairs of the state, or country; in that case, they have the power and wealth to place any of their loyalists where they want, not minding the consequences.

Yes, it was a painful experience for my family. I come from a family where my parents taught us that hard work can get you what you aim for in life, and we grew up with that mindset.

My younger sister was done with her secondary school and immediately sat for JAMB(Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board), an entrance examination to the university. She put a lot of effort into writing this examination, and she made a good grade. After that, she proceeded to write her post-UMTE (Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination)since she made the university cut-off mark for the course she wanted to study. The examination was also a successful one. This time, she made a very good score. In fact, she was second on the list with a high score. To study Law, we were so happy for her.

So, she went ahead to get her ready for the next academic section to begin her study. But on resumption when we got to the school we notice her name has been removed from the list of Law department to a different department after much inquires we found out that the Godfathers of the State i have brought the names of their candidates to replace some of those students on the list and all the school authorities could do was to move them to other departments.

We felt so bad with the level of corruption and injustices that were played out in that case, showing that Godfatherism supercedes the hard work of young students who have put in effort to write their exams and pass.

Those who struggle to get a place without Godfather's influence are most often intelligent and skilled ones. It's not an easy journey most times because this issue of Godfatherism makes them suffer a lot to get to the top, as the Godfathers are only interested in their loyal candidate or family members, making those without Godfathers irrelevant.

I have seen people without jobs who do not bother applying for job openings in newspapers or on the internet. When asked why, their reply would be "Why waste time applying when the Godfathers have secured the Jobs for their family members", and publishing the job for formality.

But it's not a reason to give up; there are still places where genuine hard work is being recognised, and there is hope for a positive change in society. One day there will be a stronger positive voice who will speak for the intelligent, experienced, talented and hardworking people who deserve a place in society.

In summary, The cabin company is sitting on a ticking time bomb, because it will continue to go down gradually, because it's been managed by an incapable head, who is the boss's son, and is not well-experienced or trained on how the company works, but was given the position based on sentiment.

These will also demoralise other staff because their raise in the cabin company is not guaranteed, as anyone could come from the blues to take their merit position, which they have worked so hard over the years to achieve.
