My Neighborhood Watch #116 - Reporting Events Around us

in Steem4Nigeria15 days ago

Good day and happy new week to my fellow Nigerian Steemians. I hope all is well, and today I am here to tell you the events happening in my neighbourhood. Every neighbourhood has its own story, one that is often told through the streets, the buildings, and the daily struggles of its people. In my neighbourhood, one of the most pressing issues is the poor condition of the road. The image below captures one of the scenes that often unfold here – a road filled with mud, potholes, and stagnant water, swallowing up vehicles and inconveniencing everyone.

This road, instead of being a path of ease and connection, has turned into a daily obstacle course. Whenever the rains fall, what should be a simple journey transforms into a battle between man, machine, and mud. Vehicles sink, engines stall, and drivers are forced to step into the dirty water just to assess the damage. Passengers, on the other hand, sit with despair written on their faces, realising that what should have been a quick ride may now take hours. Pedestrians also bear the brunt of this situation. Walking through the road requires both caution and courage. Shoes are ruined, clothes get splashed, and sometimes people fall while trying to avoid the deeper parts of the puddles. The shops lined along the roadside tell another side of the story. Business owners struggle with fewer customers whenever the road becomes too messy to navigate. A boutique, no matter how bright its lights shine, finds it hard to attract buyers when people are reluctant to cross muddy waters. This directly affects income and daily survival, as many families depend solely on these small businesses.

The poor state of the road also raises questions about leadership and responsibility. Why should hard-working people suffer daily because of something as basic as road maintenance? Why should small businesses collapse because customers cannot reach them? Good roads are not a luxury; they are a necessity for growth, safety, and dignity. Sadly, our neighbourhood has been neglected for too long, and the consequences are visible in every corner. Still, we remain hopeful. Each day we adapt, finding new ways to cope with the challenges. Motorcycles take daring shortcuts, shopkeepers raise platforms to keep goods safe, and children laugh as they carefully step across puddles. Our resilience is proof that the human spirit is stronger than any muddy road.

My neighbourhood watch is not just about observing events; it is about telling our story and calling for action. The poor condition of our road is more than an inconvenience—it is a barrier to progress. We deserve better, and until change comes, we will keep pushing, surviving, and hoping for the day when our streets will reflect the strength and beauty of the people who live here.

Flooding is one of serious environmental challenges that affects life and economy if its mismanaged, therefore government should handle it wih care.

Exactly, but instead the government seems less bothered about it

Is a pity that sometimes humans are not given the right environment to strive by the people who suppose to do so.
When it happens that way, life becomes survival of the fittest.

This is so true from your description of what happens daily as we continue to exhibit survival instincts. Sometimes, one wonders what exactly the government uses the taxes collected for. Despite the hardship and difficulty experienced within this neighborhood, I can tell you that those business owners aren't exempt from being taxed. But what value do they get?

I wouldn't say this is all about corruption but failed leadership. We lack a maintenance culture and hence the continued decay we see in our infrastructure.

Thank you for sharing with us...
