Watch a movie that reflects a part of your identity, culture, or experience.

One film that shows properties of the part of my identity and culture as an Igbo is the film called Living in Bondage. The movie is a typical Nollywood product that strongly relates to the Igbo people, their ideals, and social reality. It is about the story of a young men named Andy Okeke who out of desperation to live out of poverty joins a secret cult and sacrifices his beautiful wife to gain wealth. The movie raises the issue of greed, spiritual aftermath and redemption- some areas that touch the life of many in our society.

Living in Bondage reveals the aspects of Igbo beliefs and language and family arrangements. It reflects the pressure that most young individuals experience when they are seeking success and the way the cultural and spiritual values can be lost or maintained. Viewing it made me think about the significance of patience, morality and the perils of getting rich in a short period of time. It is an awesome story that brings out the richness of our culture and problems.

Mention 5 things from the movie that motivated you to keep pushing in life.

Both Living in Bondage: Breaking Free as well as watching it inspired me a great deal. It first portrayed how perseverance could take your capabilities to an extra mile even when the situation is stacked against you. Second, it announced the strength of identity- something never to be lost in pursuit of pursuing success.

Third, the main characters experience caused me to learn that those shortcuts tend to have some dangerous results, and growth is not a quick process. Fourth, it talked about family values and the essence of being humble. Finally, it gave me a hope that a person can atone, regardless the length of his/her course. Those doctrines have assisted me never to surrender, be steadfast to my ideals and believe that tomorrow will be better.

Who was your favorite character? And why?

Andy Okeke is my favorite character in living in bondage. His trip was moving and strong even though he had horrible decisions. I enjoyed Andy as his character depicted a true experience that most individuals undergo when the social pressure of poverty becomes unbearable. He was not a villain only he was a man who got lost in his attempt to find a better life. It was meaningful because he suffered, felt remorse and consequently wanted redemption.

Exploring the life of Andy, I realized how temptation can easily get a person when they are desperate, yet it is not late to come out of it. His act of changing into a desperate man and a person asking for forgiveness taught me that however deep we descend, we can start again with some courage or faith.

Mention at least 2 movies you have seen this year that inspired you and why they did.

Lionheart and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind are two films I viewed in this year, which actually inspired me.

The character of Lionheart motivated me since it featured a powerful and intelligent Igbo woman rising up to run the family business in the world where it is dominated by men. It made me realize that I can achieve anything because I am confident, wise, and never give up in the face of the fitting boundaries that societies impose on me. The film also commemorated family, togetherness and the Igbo culture which made it even more personal.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is impressive as it demonstrates that nothing is impossible when people are determined and after all when people are creative. When I read the story of William who had built a windmill to rescue his village it brought a realization to my mind that there is nothing that is too much to achieve as long as you are focused, hopeful and strong.
