Introduction

The first impression is that first opinion about someone or something for the first time. First impression could be about one's appearance, character or attitudinal expression, verbal expression or even about services rendered. First impression cuts across individuals, bodies and organisations.

Have you ever met someone for the first time and been impressed or turned off because of the person's actions? Tell us.

Yes, I have been impressed and also been turned off by just the first encounter.

Impressed

I met a particularly rich auntie in my sister's shop. The first time I saw her made me feel in love with her. She appeared so simple and very welcoming compared to other people of her status and calibre. She didn't even look like one of those rude and nasty so-called "rich ladies." She spoke and discussed normally without feeling on top of the world or making others feel less. She created a very positive impression that made me like her, compared to some others.

Explain your understanding of the saying first impressions matter a lot?

My understanding of "first impression matters" is that the picture one creates in people's minds when they meet for the first time. Creating a positive atmosphere or friendly mood when meeting someone for the first time can go a long way to influencing you positively, because you'll be remembered by others for good. You can even land a very impressive or good recommendation from those you have impressed positively when meeting them for the first time. Besides, you can also land bad or negative recommendations if you didn't do well based on your first encounter too. That is why whatever anyone does in their first encounter with others can either make or mar them. That's why the first impression they say matters a lot.

Tell us about your recent experience of a first impression of something or someone.

I went to a particular shop to buy groceries. I picked what I needed and the owner of the shop was just seated there looking at me while the shop attendant was busy attending to other people. I waited there with the items I wanted to buy for more than 15 minutes. I wanted to leave the shop, but it was raining, and it was late in the evening. If I leave, my children won't have anything to eat the following morning to school. So, I had to wait patiently for the shop attendant to finish with the people she chose to attend to before attending to me and the owner of the shop was seated there without saying a word. What pained me most was the fact she was my neighbour's friend.

From her attitude, I assumed they had been gossiping about me or maybe trying to downsize me. From that day, I promised I wasn't going to buy anything from her shop because of the poor service they rendered.

Tell us how people can make first impression positively count.
  1. Appear neat (dress well)

  2. Give a positive attitude (smile) and be welcoming, avoid being rude and arrogant. You might be dealing with your destiny helper.

  3. Speak in simple tenses and nice tone, avoid a rude tone of voice.

  4. Maintain a positive body language at all times.

  5. Treat people equally, avoid treating people by their appearance. You may be dealing with someone you have been earnestly desiring to meet.

  6. Be polite in your approach to people

When you meet people for the first time just know that your appearance, actions and behaviour matters a lot. Always be at your best.
