Things start trending only when a lot of people join in. It happens in my country too that something goes viral and then after that it spreads all over the country and then it becomes a trend. It was very fashionable and everyone else was wearing it and when someone was not wearing it, it looked quite strange. A trend is something that when it comes, everyone gets carried away by it and whoever does something different from the trend looks strange. Although everyone has different dressing styles, a trend is something that everyone has to follow.As it was a while ago, there was a trend of "farshi shalwar" in my country it was followed by everyone else. I won't say if there was any exotic place or specific city that made it fashionable. It was also very popular in the country, and it seemed to be worn by people who didn't wear it.
