My Neighborhood Watch #114 - Reporting Events Around us

in Steem4Nigeria5 days ago (edited)

My neighbour recently started a catfish farm. In as much as I didn't meet him through the process of building the pond, I was able to give my 2 cents when he was purifying the pond for the fishes. He brought the fingerlings in 3 weeks ago. At that time they were so small you couldn't decipher them well, but with everything that grows, they've started growing and getting bigger.
One of the most common issue with catfish farming is where to dispose of the water regularly as the water smells a lot and can constitute environmental pollution.
For this he has erected a water tank solely for the aim of disposing the water, my question remains: What will he do once the water tank is full and can't carry water anymore??

The constructed water tank

In as much as we have a very large compound filled with vegetation, still the place may likely smell if he pours the water there.
Anyways, we're yet to find out as this is still the first batch and their water hasn't been disposed of yet.

This pond has become the convergence point and center of conversation amongst the tenants. Heading out to his pond to see how the fishes are doing, my elderly neighbours join me, both wowing and awwing about the fishes.

You can see the smiles as their faces light up excitedly while they talk about the different stages and processes the fishes will undergo before they're ready for sale.
In this kind of conversations, you'll get a lot of unsolicited advices and teaching on how to take care of the fishes.
The man notices and points to a place the fishes are all gathered at, and the elderly woman begins to explain that the water is colder there due to the steel panels kept there as shade.

All through the conversation I listen, gleaning what wisdom I can get, of course I add some knowledge of what I know as we speak. The man makes a comment that catfish farming is better than poultry farming as the casualty rate is lower than that of birds.

  • Do you agree with this notion??

I'm obliged to chime in here as I've raised both birds and catfish and I know that all it takes is an insane amount of watchfulness for any of them to do well.
Soon the conversation comes to an end and they leave to speak to another neighbour who is passing by.

I use this opportunity to take a few pictures of the structure as I take my leave.

Above is the water tank and the compound environment. Have you ever reared any of these animals mentioned here and are there any words of wisdom you can drop for my neighbour??? We'd be glad to hear from you. @hyacinthfavour and @beewrites join this contest.

People really are waking up to these things and it's heartwarming to see.

The future of man's survival, will rest largely on our ability to grow and produce our own food

Yes dear. And I'm glad that the economy is improving gradually.
Agriculture is the only key to survival.
