Trends in My Country
Nigeria is a country of vibrant energy. If there’s one thing we do well, it’s catching trends like a fever. From fashion runways in Lagos to remote corners of Owerri, the wave of what's "in" travels fast, sometimes faster than the truth.

Lately, one of the loudest trends in my city is the Dami UMGrrrrrrr sound on TikTok. It’s that funny, awkward sound people lip-sync to or dance with a dramatic turn of the neck and a twisted expression. At first glance, it looks like nothing more than a joke, but it’s everywhere. Tailors, makeup artists, chefs, and even pastors' kids are jumping on it. It’s harmless, fun, and oddly addictive. It also proves something: trends now control what goes viral, and what goes viral gets attention, followers, sales, and sometimes even opportunities.
But… not all that glitters is gold.
✨ Fashion: Then and Now
Let’s talk about trending styles in Nigeria:
👗 Style 1 – Corset Aso-Ebi
Everyone and their aunty is squeezing into a corset lace dress. It’s beautiful, flattering, and “Instagrammable.” But some struggle to breathe while slaying it 😅

👖 Style 2 – Ankara Jumpsuit with Sneakers
A blend of culture and Gen Z sass. It screams bold and casual. Compare that with the buba and iro of our mothers, it’s a radical shift.

🧢 Style 3 – Agbada + Hat Combo
Imagine tradition meeting street swag. Boys now wear agbada with sneakers and hats, ditching the fila. It’s rebellion but with elegance.

Before now, outfits were mostly worn for cultural or spiritual meaning. Now, it’s more about statement than substance.
🌀 Hopping Trends: A Blessing or a Curse?
Here’s my honest thought: Trends are not evil, until they become your identity.
I’ve seen people plunge into financial stress trying to "keep up." Young girls are taking loans just to buy wigs because it's trending. Teen boys pretending to be billionaires online for views. What’s the gain in gaining clout but losing your mind?
Yes, hopping on some trends like Dami UMGrrrrrrr may help boost social media growth. But some trends, like risky TikTok stunts, have ended lives. We must ask ourselves: Is the trend serving me, or am I a slave to it?
❤️ Why I Stick to My Truth
I enjoy trends. I laugh. I post. I dance sometimes. But I don’t follow all. My peace matters more than my reach. I’ve seen how chasing validation can break a person.
This is why I believe trends should be tools, not chains. We can enjoy the fun, express ourselves, but we must never lose who we are in the crowd.
📸 Final Thoughts
Nigeria will never stop trending, from music to slang to style. But as trends fly, may we be grounded in purpose.
So whether it’s Dami UMGrrrrr today or something else tomorrow, I’ll enjoy the ride, but I’ll keep my eyes on what really matters: peace, purpose, and authenticity.

The way we jump on trends is what marvelled me
But I still find it funny and lovely to watch especially different people slaying dresses
Lol, yeah its a funny thing and that's why we need our values to know which one to do or not.
You found a good balance for your life. Congratulations ;-))
Yes, i believe life is about balance. Too much of everything is bad.

Yea is true those cloths are really trending for those that like to sew Ankara material.
Yes...It's a beautiful one.
Finding the right balance is key, not jumping on trends just to impress or attract attention. Nice writeup
