From pen to screen: How writing has changed in the 21st century!"
Hello friends, I guess we are all doing well. It is an interesting topic to show how much value we've ploughed into writing and the changes therein as technology continues to advance. Growing up, I remember when competitions were held for writing, and the best writers were awarded. Let's get to the business of the day using the stipulated guidelines.
• Judging from your knowledge, what is "Digital writing and what is Handwriting?" |
---|
The name differentiates these two terms. While one hinges on an online mechanism that allows us to use its tools to carry out writing, like the keypads and notepads, handwriting entails manual and direct use of hands, leveraging writing tools like pens and pencils.
While digital writing involves the use of online tools such as keypads, notepads, other touchscreen and software applications, handwriting primarily involves the use of pens, pencils, chalk, and other manual tools to carry out writing.
While digital writing entails that written work could be easily edited and ensures speed with high collaboration among partners, handwriting lacks this specific feature as any attempt to edit already written work means cancellation and alteration, which defaces the work done.
With digital writing, accessing our writing has been made a lot easier, void of space and barriers, which can be edited over time and stored. Whereas this is the limitations found in handwriting with little user case in the aforementioned.
• Which do you use more every day: handwriting or digital writing? Express yourself. |
---|
I have a laptop and a smartphone that help aid my blogging experience and my offline job. In this case, I tend to use more digital writing in most of the things I do.
The correspondences I attend to, the emails suggesting my route plans, and other JDs are largely handled using the digital platform. Just like my blogging right now, I am currently using my smartphone.
On a scale of 100, I find myself largely inclined to digital writing with about 95% of my daily schedules. In some cases, I do the complete 100% on digital writing without handwriting for the day.
• For memory retention, creativity, expression, and effective learning, would you go for digital writing or handwriting? Why? |
---|
Before the proliferation of the digital space, we were largely dependent on handwriting for all of the mentioned indices, and that has worked well with us without much ado. However, the digital space only comes with a much better way of attending to handwriting activities.
For memory retention, I have always believed that what we write down with our hands sticks better and lasts longer. This may find its way in circumstances we created within the space and at the time of writing. We seem to be more practically involved in it, unlike when the machine does all the other automatic fill-ups.
For creativity, I may give it to the digital writing given the array of features therein. We have several formatting tools that provide us with the benefits of creativity. Our job tends to come out better, finer, and more refined. Though we can also see this in handwriting, where we have displays of artwork and other things. This may also be the same for effective learning, as it provides us with better learning aids that promote learning.
• Should schools still initiate handwriting in this digital age? Do you think it would profit the young ones? |
---|
A mix of the two would be. A better blend in our schools. The digital space shouldn't completely override this aspect of learning and expression. I observed that we write down to give us more memory lanes.
It creates ownership and personalizes what we do. Handwriting just does not give us the option of autocorrect, spelling, and grammar checks. That is to say, it keeps us on the go as we continue to refine what we feel we know without guessing.
However, handwriting goes a long way in allowing us to express ourselves in the best possible manner.
• State the pros and cons of each; digital writing and handwriting. |
---|
Digital Writing
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
This comes with a lot of speed and efficiency during action | Could bring addiction over prolonged use and distractions from other normal activities |
Have more liberal and diverse forms of storage | Damages and effects from screen use and blue light interference. |
Easy to edit and adjust where necessary | Over-dependency on energy and power sources to stay afloat. |
Can be accessed anywhere, void of barriers and spaces | It does not completely bring ownership and a feeling of writing due to the exposure of online aids. |
Comes in diverse fonts and formats (audio-visuals) | Technology know-how and use of software challenges. |
Handwriting
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Tendencies of high retention memory. Improves cognitive abilities | Unlike the speed in digital writing, handwriting is slower |
Allows us to express ourselves in a manner unique to us | Difficulties in editing or adjustments. This in most cases becomes burdensome |
Activities can be done without dependency on power or energy sources | Limited storage platforms to house our write-ups |
No cases of addiction in view nor screen light effects | Damages of misuse and defacing of materials. |

MOD Comment/Recommendation:
You've done noble in expatiating on how life has evolved from using pen and paper to digital writing. This is what the tertiary institution in my city wants to integrate. Thanks for also making personal references to your blogging life and offline job with regards to the bone of contention here.

Nice write-up sir!
I enjoyed reading it. It brings back past memories of how much I used to love writing stories with pen and paper back then. Although now we are in the digital era, but I still write on paper because it's easy to pick up and refer to whenever I need it. Thanks for sharing.
