In the last few days, the atmosphere in my neighborhood has been quite lively with various community activities. Almost all residents, from young to old, participated.

Since morning, residents have gathered with their respective tools such as hoes, shovels, and buckets. The sound of laughter was heard in between their busy cleaning up the accumulated garbage and mud. There were also mothers who were busy preparing snacks and drinks for the fathers who worked in the field. This mutual cooperation activity is not only about cleaning the environment, but also a means of strengthening ties between residents.

In addition to the mutual cooperation activities, a few days ago there was also a routine religious study event held in one of the residents' houses. The event was attended by mothers and fathers from various RTs. They read Yasin and tahlil together, then continued with a short sermon from the local cleric. The theme discussed in this study was the importance of maintaining good relations with neighbors and increasing concern in the community. It was a gloomy room, but not cheerless, for there was some gentle badinage here and there.

And in the afternoon, local children typically congregate in a small field near the mosque, playing ball. They are great to hear with their peels of laughter and shrieks of delight which add to the holiday mood of the Saturday afternoon. A coffee shop at the side of the road is also where many of the older locals go to unwind and hang out at, and discuss a wide range of topics, from politics, farming, and the rising prices of commodities.

It’s quieter in the evenings. After a long day at work, our city’s residents most likely want to come home to relax or be with family. Occasionally you can hear the sound of motorbikes driving past or teenage girls chatting in the alley.

I am just more and more grateful to live in a world of togetherness and care.’ Simple as it is, this sense of neighborliness is a reminder that the way to a peaceful life starts with decent relations among fellow residents.
