INTRODUCTION

Farming is one of the occupations that people were hesitant to engage themselves in. Now the current economic global conditions has revealed that actually, without Agriculture, the world is gone. This proves that agriculture is the base for economic and human survival.

Just as the global economic meltdown set in, beginning in the past few years, people from all regions of the world started looking for alternatives for survival in terms of food and as a source of income. This now brought back an overwhelming interest into the abandoned farming occupation. You could now see with me how far important farming is to to the society.

From this point above, I find necessary to introduce myself to this wonderful Agro community which I just discovered recently. I know I would be welcomed here by my fellow Agro steemians here.

My Life As A Farmer

Untitled design_20250603_011038_1.png

I am a small scale or peasant farmer who embraced farming from my parents even though I am a graduate. I engage in planting and production of different crops as well as livestock such as broilers. Even though I am a small scale farmer, my experience cuts across planting over Ten (10) different crops. These includes:
Tubers:

  • Cassava
  • Yam
  • Cocoa yam
  • Ginger
  • Three leaf yam

Other crops are:

  • Melon
  • Maize
  • Paw paw
  • Plantain
  • Banana
  • Vegetables

All these are planted in different parts of the little portion land which is about ten to fifteen plots of land.

Among all these crops, cassava takes the largest portion followed by vegetables and then plantains. Other crops take smaller portions.

My Means Of Farming
Some farmers may use mechanized farming system even on small portion of land. For the meantime, I can't afford mechanized farming because of the cost.

I use crude farming tools to do my farming work. The tools I use are:

  • Native hoes
  • Shovel
  • Trowel
  • Cutlass
I engage the services of few laborers who use the same kind tools with me, to do the job for me. After their work, they paid.

How I Use My Farm Produce

After harvesting, I share or divide my farm produce in three portions. They are:

  • Portion For consumption
As a farmer, I have to eat the fruits of my labor. For this reason I have to make sure that I have enough of the crops for food. I don't have to go to the market to buy everything.

  • Portion For Sale
I sell some of my farm produce also and not just to eat everything. I would be needing some money to get other items or make some expenses.

  • Portion For Reserve
I reserve some of my crops to be used for the next planting season. This would help me to cut costs of crops that often rises during the next planting season.

Finally, I so much love farming even as I do it in small scale. I also encourage everyone to engage into farming nor matter how small it is.

Cost of food is rising on daily basis and one needs to find a way to make food available for the family at a reduced cost.

I feel good to be in this community and believe that my subsequent publications through participating in contents and engagements would positively impact the community. This in return, would propel my growth in the community and the steemit platform at large.
