RODENTS
Rodents are small mammals with large, sharp front teeth that attack crop Plants on the farm and they also attack stored food items. Examples of rodents are rabbits, monkeys, squirrels, grasscutters and rats.

These rodents are most often referred to as the farmer's enemy because they cause a lot of damage to the crops. They attack all the parts of a crop plant such as the root, stem, leaf, fruits and seeds. Rodents cut the roots of plants with their sharp teeth and these cause the death of a plant.

Damages caused by Rodents

• There droppings contaminate farm produce and foods, which causes illness in animals and humans when consumed.

• They destroy farm house structures, incurring expenses for the farmer to fix them.

• Their infestation on farm produce makes it unsafe for consumption.

• On their quest to consume crops, they make holes or openings in the packaging of farm produce, which condemns the package.

These damages caused by rodents on the farm lead to poor yields. Farmers have found a means of controlling these enemies of their (rodents) which includes

• Farmers shoot these rodents that attack their crops with a gun and a catapult.

• Farmers use locally made traps to catch rodents like squirrels, rats and grasscutters

• Farmers use poisons/rodenticides to kill rodents. This should be done with care to avoid applying edible parts to them, and the killed rodent should not be eaten.

• Farmers store their farm products properly in rodent-free places where rodents cannot reach them.

• Scarecrow is also used. It has the image of a man standing on the farm, objects that make sound are something placed on the body of the scarecrow so that when the wind blows, it shakes the image and it makes a noise that scares the rodents away.

Erradicating these farmers' enemies (rodents) could be difficult most times as they have many hiding places in the farm and give birth in multiples which makes it uneasy to find them all out

But when a farmer can control rodents on the farm, it can ensure peace with his crop, farm structures, his crop packaging and food safety. When this is achieved there should be a constant check for any sign of their return for an early intervention.
