FARM INSECTS

Farm insects are different species of insects found in the farm or agricultural ecosystem. These insects can be useful, harmful to the farm or both harmful and useful.

Useful Farm Insects
However, the useful farm insects are of benefit to plants, animals, humans and the farmer. Examples of these farm animals are:

• Termite; helps in enriching the soil
• Bee; this insect produces honey for the farmer, giving the farmer a means of income generation.
• Wasp; helps in pollunating of flowers

• Praying mantis; kills harmful insects that destroy farm crop. Helping the farmer keep harmful insects in check.

• Butterfly; is a useful to the farm, it goes from flower to flower , the liquid they collect from flower is called nectar and pollen grains, these rub off when the butterfly visits another plant in this way a butterfly pollinates or fertilises plants.

There are also insects that are both useful and harmful to crops in the farm examples are;

• Termite; it helps enriches the soil both destories farm crops with their mouth. Termites also destroy furniture in farm offices.

• Ant; dig into the soil and make air available to the soil, increasing soul aeration. Young farm animals are also been attcked and killed by ants

• Bees; they produce honey for the farmer and also sting people for defence.

These are inssects that destroy or cause damage to crops, farm animals and human examples of these insects

• Cockroaches
• Weevils
• Beetles
• Caterpillars
• Aphids
• Locusts
• Mosquitoes
• Cotton stainers
• Houseflies
• Tsetse flies
• Termites

Harmful insects food in storage and in the farm like the beetle that destories yam and potatoes, also the weevils that destories beans cowpeas, corn grains, rice and dried fish. These insects like the temites locust and grasshoppers destroy crops leave, stem, and roots by eating them. All this damages on farm crops reduce the market values of these farm products most times these crop are left unstable for consumptions.

Moreso, harmful insect causes sicknesses to human, like mosquito bite that transmits malaria, houseflies that causes diarrhoea when eaten the food that got infected by it. Also sleeping sickness in human and farm animals caused by tsetse flies.

Ways harmful Farm insects can be controlled
To get ride or reduce the effects of these harmful farm insects, some measures should be implemented such as

• Stagnant water should be prevent to avoid mosquito breeding and also mosquito nets should be used to prevent harmful insect from having a direct contact to human and farm produce

• Bushes should be cleared to prevent insects hiding in them

• Chemicals should be spray with a sprayer to kill insects and their larve to prevent the attack on crop plants.

• There should be proper storage of farm produce like grains should be stored in an airtight containers like kegs to avoid weevil attack. Also, yams should be stored in barns to prevent beetle attack.
