The Ibibio Union Museum
Ibibio union museum is one of the oldest museum in the city which holds the cultural works of the Ibibio people in the state. It is not like your regular museum which gives details to many cultural groups, this particular one was built to showcase the cultural heritage of the Ibibio people. Let me be your tour guide as I take you straight to the Museum.
• | Brief history |
---|
The ibibio union museum was built as early as 1921 which makes it one of the oldest museum in the state, it was built in the heart of the city and it is placed in the center of a large park. If you would notice, this building has wall wings, 6 wings which is not just a mere structural design.
These six wall wings are erected outwards and each wing holds a photo and details of Ibibio scholars. I made a move to see the details of each scholar on the wings, since it is circular I nearly turned twice.
It is erected in honor of the six scholars and also to showcase the cultural significance and heritage of the Ibibio cultural group.
A picture of me outside the museum
This structure was commissioned in 2007 by Obong Victor Attah who was the sitting governor. The structure was modernized and commissioned in 2007.
The structure has a great significance to the Ibibio people of the state as it holds many cultural significance and artifacts.
• | Ownership and management |
---|
This structure is owned by the government as it was established by them for the Ibibio union. It is a Government-run project and it is placed in the park permanently.
The maintenance is sponsored by the government, the whole facility and surrounding area is top notch, always maintained. You would always meet workers and security officers there every day of the week which makes it more useful and safe to visitors.
There was a notable curator which is Mr uwa usen who curated the Art show in 2017, which was known as the Usoro iso art show. It was a wonderful show in the museum.
• | Exterior and Entrance |
---|
The Architects that were in charge of this project did the best work in that time of the year. The structure is placed on a low hill, not too high which increases visibility to the structure as you pass by the park. It is designed in a Circular structure with six outward flat walls.
I had more understanding of the structure/architecture of the building when I saw an aerial photo of it, I now understood the how well the architects were able to do their assignment.
This Museum has one of the best exterior in the state, you could see how green the environment is which is always levelled every 3 to 4 weeks. The accessibility is top notch, the whole park which is now fenced round has 4 entrances which all leads to the museum.
As a tourist finding your way to the park, the museum would be one of the most easiest place to locate in the park, it has lots of parking space and a good walkway. Getting in from the main entrance which has the Ibibio union museum writeup, walk up the stairs and up to the door, you will find the ticketing desk just right after you open the museum door.
• | Outdoor |
---|
The outdoor area of the museum is top notch, you could see the greens and how they're neat. People come there to rest or even take wedding photoshoot. I once saw couples wedding at the park. It has good seat outs and parking lots which are very accessible by thousands of cars. In the last cultural festival, the park hosted more than ten thousand of people which hundreds of cars, the exit and entrance was smooth due to the spacious environment.
It has a clean and spacious football field, which in every day of the week you will always find footballers playing football there. The outdoor holds a thousand capacity open field which cultural events are hosted
The cultural art work is giving, cyou could find some of the artworks you saw in the museum painted on these walls.
Maintenance? This structure and park has the best focus ever, they are well maintained.
• | Interior |
---|
The interior is very neat and clean, and the atmosphere supports a clear visibility to the artworks and artifacts. Each artwork is clearly visible and has a written note/label under it for the description of the work.
It is spacious with good ventilation system. Since it is round you don't have problems with navigation, just tour till you meet your starting point.
• | Exhibits and Display |
---|
In one of the cultural posts i made, there was a statue of the man with a wooded horn in the city, I was shocked to see that similar statue here. Dressed in cultural attire, he blows a wooded horn, which means he is the voice of the Ibibio people. This is a very unique piece in the state
Throne made from wood for Title men and kings
This is a structural carved out chair made from wood, it is one of the art works of the ibibio people.
A young boy washing his clothes
This shows how hardworking every person is in the state, even at this young age he is taught on how to carry out some tasks.
Young woman suffering from the weight of the basket
The weight of the basket is pulling the woman down, nevertheless she keeps going, perseverance
a carved structure of a palm wine tapper
Palm wine is very important for the Ibibio culture, it is used in many ceremonies so palm wine tappers were known to be very important and rich then.

In terms of additional interactive screens, there are no interactive screens or audios in the museum. They're restrooms just outside the museum, for elderly people they just walk easily up there, and there are no special features for the disabled.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
I have been there the environment is beautiful and top notch.
I have identified some photos I saw there too and what shocked me most was the amount at which some of those art work is being sold🥲
If you read them you'll be shocked
Very wonderful 😊.
It's not easy to craft such hand work, it might take them weeks and months before they could come up with something
Please consider supporting Proposal #100 to boost the video on Steem.
