Discuss on the Role of Irrigation on modern Agriculture?

In modern times population is growing fast and food demand is also increasing. Farmers cannot depend only on rainfall because it is uncertain and irregular. Sometimes rainfall is too heavy and destroys crops and sometimes there is no rainfall which causes drought. In such casis irrigations is the bests solution. It ensures that water reachess the crops at the right times and in the right amount.

Role of Irrigations in Food Production

One of the most important roles of irrigation is in increasing food production. Countries with developed irrigation systems produce more food and reduce hunger. For example wheat rice and sugarcane in South Asian countries depend heavily on canal irrigation. Without irrigation the production of these crops would be very low.

Role of Irrigation in Growing Crop Varieties

Irrigations allows farmers to grow many kinds of crops in different seasons. In summer farmers can grow cotton and rice whiles in winter they can grows wheat and vegetables. With irrigation even fruits and cash crops can be grown easily. This variety increases farmers income and makes agriculture more profitable.

Role of Irrigation in Soil Fertility

Modern irrigation systems like drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigations give water in a balanced way. Too much or too litle water can damaged the soil. Drip irrigations prevents wastage of water and keeps the soil healthy. It also helps in distrebuting fertilizers evenly in the field. This improves soil fertelity and crops quality.

Role of Irrigation in Employment and Economy

Irrigation supports not only crops but also people. When farmers produce more crops industries such as food processing storage and transport also grow. This provides jobs to many people and strengthens the economy. Irrigation is therefore directly linked to the progress of a country.

Challenges of Irrigation

Even though irrigation is very helpful there are some challenges. Building dams canals and tube wells is very costly. Poor farmers cannots afford modern irrigations systems. Sometimes over-irrigation causes waterloging and salinity in soil. Also in some areas water resources are limited. So governmints must guides farmers to use water wisely and provide them with support.

Irrigation plays a very big role in modern agriculture. It increases food production helps in growing many crop varieties maintains soil fertility and provides jobs. Without irigationsit is very difficult to meets the needs of the growing population. Governments and farmers must worked together to use irrigation systems in a modern and sustainable way.
