Basic knowledge in Agriculture #41
Discuss on the Animal husbandry
Animal husbandry is a branch in agriculture, dealing mainly with the care and welfare of animals. Not just any animal but farm animals or livestock (they include: cows, goats, sheeps, aquatic animals and farm birds like turkey, chickens, fowls and lots more).
In animal husbandry, the livestock's health and welfarism is well monitored. The farmers involved put into practice the deliberate consideration of time, weather, water, feeds, temperature used for their rearing.
Discuss on types of animal husbandry
Animal husbandry is of different types, which can be based on the types of animal
Fishery: this is mainly on fishes (not generally aquatic animals) and they include all sorts of fishes that can be reared in the pond. They include croaker, catfish, koi and all others. In this area thorough care and feeding of the fishes is put into consideration.
Cattle rearing: also known as cattle husbandry. Here cattles are reared for consumption and production of their diary products commonly known as milk. The welfarism of cows is not handled with levity in this area.
Poultry husbandry: it is also known as poultry keeping; this area of animal husbandry deals with the rearing of domestic or farm birds for the production of meat, eggs, feathers and other breeds. The birds involved in this agriculture includes fowls, guinea fowls, ducks, quails, turkeys and so on.
Herds keeping: this deals mainly with Sheep and goats, leaving out cows. Sheeps are reared for their wool and meat (mutton); while goats are reared for their meat and milk (because they also produce milk).
Challenges and solutions in animal husbandry
Challenges
- Disease and health management: management of diseases on farm animals require a lot of effort and can the breakouts can be quite stressful. Farmers have to be able to do all they can to prevent the spread of viral, bacterial and fungal diseases of the livestock.
solution: techniques like vaccination and proper sanitation would reduce diseases and health risks of the livestock - Feeding: feeding livestock can also be quite a challenge for farmers in the sense of finding suitable feeds, their sizes depending on the stage growth of the animals and sometimes means of getting them. Paying attention to the components of the feeds also is important to avoid consumption of unpleasant substances by the farm animals.
solution: Being well and currently aware of feeds in the market would prevent unnecessary cost and ingestion of wrong products by the livestock. - Environmental impacts: this can come in form of natural or artificial route. Naturally, in form of the heavy rainfall, cold weather, dust and all; it can also be man-made ok leading to smoke from bush burning, greenhouse gases. All these happen with no intention of harming the livestock, but they do
Solution: Trying as much as possible to provide shelters that would protect the animals from environmental hazards.
