Irrigation systems
Types of irrigation systems
Advantages of irrigation systems
Irrigation systems.
Irrigation systems are set of agricultural infrastructure built on the farm to regulate the amount of water or hydration provided for the plants.
On the farm, the irrigation systems is not necessarily provided for all farm use or for the livestock; it is built or provided mostly to provide water for the plants and hydrate the soil on which they grow on.
These systems usually have their advantages and are of great importance on the farmland both for the plants and the soil
Types of Irrigation
There are different types of irrigation systems employed on the farm depending on where they are needed, farmer's budget or how large the farmland might be.
- Sprinkler irrigation: this type of system is built in a way which sprinkles water on crops grown over a broad area of land. It is mostly used for wide farmland, lawns or garden.
- Flood irrigation system: just as the name implies, in this system water is released in a very large amount over the farmland where the crops are grown. The land is practically flooded with water; it is used mostly when growing plants like rice, sugarcane and the likes.
- Micro-irrigation system: this type of system is also or can also be referred to as drip irrigation systems. The water is released in drips and directly to the soil and roots of the grown crops instead through what is called drippers. In this system, the water does not necessarily come in contact with the whole plants.
- Localized irrigation system: this type is the simplest and cheapest whereby the plants gets hydrated manually and individually through watering can or pipes.
Advantages of irrigation systems
- During unfavourable weather e.g low rainfall, irrigation systems might seem to be very helpful and a good idea. This would ensure provision of water for the plants.
- Irrigation systems help to conserve the use of water. Hydration process is regulated to avoid unnecessary wastage of water.
- Irrigation system provides water for plants and this supports their growth, hence there is high crop yield.
- Proper provision of moisture for plants could also do a good job maintaining the crops' health thereby reducing the risk of getting infected with any disease.
