Animal Activities #30
hi everybody 😃
Morning mist enveloped suka jaya village, on the edge of the forest. The trees, towering like pillars to the sky, became silent silhouettes of their own shadows; the birdsong seemed muffled by the layers of soil.
But amidst the silence, the young fox Ruma did his duty: checking scents and focusing, he walked among the faint tracks left by the forest's inhabitants in the wetlands. And Ruma was no ordinary fox—since he was a child, he could hear with his large ears the squeaking of furtive mice from tens of meters away and the rustling of leaves shaken by the spring breeze.
Below it sat a stray kitten, wet and wounded; dirt covered its eyes, its paws stiff with cold. Ruma could have abandoned the kitten: who knew better than the wild how cruel they could be. But she couldn't; something in her heart refused to ignore it.
Ruma licked the kitten first; she licked the wounds and the dirt cleanest, then she picked up some dirt, and made a hole in the soft earth with her front paws near a rock. Ruma covered the kitten with her body. Ruma stayed there for two days; she protected the kitten from those who would kill it, from the rain and the cold.
But the grand confrontation of wildlife is a fight that can’t be delayed indefinitely. Once the kitten was old enough to stand that he saw his opportunity.
They got up and continued walking, until they arrived at the verge of a deep wood that bordered upon one side of a village near which human beings dwelt. Ruma parted the bushes and saw a toddler seated on the step tossing seeds to birds gathered there. Bundchen nudged the kitten from thick underbrush, then turned and vanished into a mist.
The kitten raised its head and the child took it in instantly. She called it Cloud — that was how she had seen this creature rise from the mists.
Ruma never returned to the village, but sometimes she heard laughter and children singing in the distance. She faced the sounds, her ears ringing, and upon returning to the forest, she knew she had saved a life in this cold world.
Sometimes even the wildest creatures have softer hearts than we think.
