Namak Mandi is one of the most legendary food destinations not just in Pakistan, but in the entire world. This street food is situated in the center of the old city of Peshawar near Shoba Bazar.

History:

Namak Mandi translates to "Salt Market. Before pre-partition of Indo-Pak this area was a center for trading salt and other goods. Over time it evolved into a concentrated hub of restaurants and remains a significant food and cultural landmark in Peshawar.

As you enter the food street an unforgettable aroma of meat dishes takes you to the world of special Pakhtun cusine, All specializing in a wide range of Pakhtoon style beef and mutton feasts.

Communication:

Local language is Pushtu but the street vendors and workers can also understand other languages like Urdu Hindko, Punjabi and English easily.

Facilities:

It is about communal dining on large Dastarkhwans (floor spreads). Some vendors also provide dinning table system. They can also enjoy open air dinning. Focus of ever vendor is to provide best quality of food along with best serving facilities. The owners up-to workers behave friendly. Food prepared is almost hygienically but sometime cleanliness issues appear there. Prices are reasonable as compared to the quality of food. Meat dishes starting at least from 550 PKR that is 15.05 steem.

1. Chapli Kebab

This is the king of Street food in Peshawar. It is a large and flat round piece made of mincemeat of beef or a mix of beef & mutton. It's almost always eaten with a fluffy, tandoor-baked naan.

2. Shinwari Karahi / Namak Mandi Karahi

This is one of the most popular and traditional food items of Namak Mandi. It is the unique version of tomato based karahi found elsewhere in Peshawar. This is mixed in a karahi (wok) with a dollop of animal fat (roghan) and a sprinkle of fresh coriander leaves. All specializing in Pakhtoon style beef and mutton feasts.

3 Karahi / Siri Paye

Karahi: The speciality of this food item is its amazing aroma that boosts the hunger of visitors. Main ingredients of this extremely rich and flavourful food is fatty meat from a specific breed of a sheep. Karahi has more varieties such as Sheekh kabab karahi, Seekh Tikka Karahi, Chicken Karahi, Kaleeji Karahi (Lever of goat or cow)
Siri Paye: This is a type of delicious stew made from the head (siri) and trotters (paye) of a goat or cow. It is cooked slowly overnight that makes it a gelatin like stew. It is considered a power house of energy. It is basically a healthy breakfast item.

4. Pulao & Kabuli Pulao

Pulao and Kabuli Pulao is also popular dish of Peshawar, often eaten with Karahi .


5. Seekh Kebab and Tikka

Seekh kabab and Seek Tikka, are also a part of great traditions which varies in beef, mutton and chicken chunks which is marinated and grilled on traditional fire and sizzling on every corner of the street food.

The Unique Dining:

1.Communal Floor Seating

Customers sit on raised platforms (takhts) or on carpets on the floor with a Dastarkhwan (floor spread) Shoes are left off. It is a social and relaxed enviornent where you eat with your hands. Your table will be set with:
Fresh, hot naan straight from the tandoor, Salad of Raw onions, green chilies, and lemons, yogurt (raita).

2.Chai or Qahwa is Must.
