Kauma's boat kitchen, Wellawaya
You might wonder what kind of place this is: a restaurant or a se adventure? Well, let me introduce you to one of the most unique and amazing dining experiences in my area.
People are creative and imaginative. So, this guy has turned his vision into something extraordinary, and it has become a successful business venture, even winning awards. It's not just the unique concept, but the quality service and tasty foods that have helped to stand out from the rest.
The Location
Well, it's situated in one of the most strategic locations in the area. We have to take the Ella-Wellawaya road, which is a high-profile route. The location is around 1km from the Wellawaya town, facing the main route. It's very easy to find and reach.
This is a common route taken by travelers to reach Ella, Bandarawela, and the Badulla area. As there are so many major attractions available nearby, the place has become a popular joint.
As you can see, the view from the entrance is stunning, and so is their tidy arrangement. And the view of misty mountains and paddy fields from the other side makes this place a gem. So, the place gave us a good first impression as expected.
There is a big garden with enough parking for free. And as you can see, there are different options for dine-in according to our choices. Either way, we can enjoy the vibe with the breeze and stunning view.
Anyhow, the spotlight of this restaurant is enjoying your meals at the Boat terrace. It's not something we usually get, and my wife and I took that option straight away. There is a small staircase to reach the top in the middle.
And voila, they’ve set up the terrace beautifully. It’s not a large space, but it’s enough for a few tables; one family table for six people and three smaller tables for two. In total, about twelve guests can dine comfortably on the top.
The roof is covered traditional method using coconut leaves, and as you can see, there are guard rails around the boat for safety. So, don't hesitate to let your kids peek at the horizon. At the top, there's a sink as well, with the necessary soap and sanitary facilities.
The paddy fields, mountains, greenery, mist, and the blue sky will just soothe your minds. And also, going forward from the restaurant, there are swing sets, and a few options in the field for children to play.
So, let's move to the most important thing: the menu. The place is known for seafood variations, mixed with Sri Lankan cuisine. But not only that, there are so many options.
- Rice Options - Fried Rice (Chicken, egg, Seafood, Mix), Chop-Suey Rice, Nasigurang, Mongolian, Sri Lankan Rice & Curry, Biriyani
- Kottu
- Pasta
- Noodles
- Fried & Grilled
- Drinks, juice, and beverages
- Snacks (Hot Dog, French Fries, Burger, Crispy Chicken)
The Menu
You can see the full list from the above image, or there is a full list on their website, Menu. A 10% service charge is added to all orders. As you can see, the prices are very reasonable as per the standard prices in Sri Lanka. (1$ = 302 LKR, 1 Steem = 29 LKR)
Our order
Well, we ordered full Chicken fried rice and two Cokes. The staff was very friendly, and within 10 minutes we received our order. As there are many customers in the premises, it was quite reasonable.
And it was delicious. It has a unique taste, and there were sufficient chicken portions available for both of us. And the portion is very sufficient for us.
We finished the meal within 15 minutes, and they straightaway gave us the bill. It was Rs . 1,870 (65 Steem at the current rate). Cash or card options are available here. So, it's pretty easy for the customers.
So, overall we had a quite quality there. The location, atmosphere, the staff, taste, and everything are wonderful. Even though the place is crowded, there's no disturbance for anyone, and there's adequate staff to handle everyone. The staff members are also dressed in the same uniform, which is quite disciplined, and the owner was also very polite, engaging with the customers.
We had a great time here, and highly recommend the place for anyone. On your way to Ella, this will be your affordable and excellent choice to have a bite.
