Jongmyo

Jongmyo is a tomb on the Confucian Jongmyo system, where the rituals are performed for successive kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty, and is adjacent to Changdeokgung Palace and Changgyeonggung Palace in its location. The building of Jongmyo was built in 1395 when King Taejo moved the capital to Hanyang(Now Seoul), and was destroyed during the Imjin War and rebuilt in the year of King Gwanghaegun(1608). Jongmyo is designated and preserved as a private property, and its cultural properties include Jeongjeon(national treasure), Yeongnyeongjeon(treasure), Jongmyo Jeryeak(national intangible cultural property), and Jongmyo Jerye(national intangible cultural property).

The building of Jongmyo was divided into Jeongjeon-Hall and Yeongnyeongjeon-Hall, and in Jeongjeon-Hall, the predecessor and the queen who were officially crowned were enshrined in order, and in Yeongnyeongjeon-Hall, the parents of the predecessor or the restored kings were enshrined. In addition, a separate palace tomb was established as a shrine where the king enshrine his cousin, not the birth of the crony.

Jongmyo, along with Sajikdan, shows the spirit of Joseon Dynasty, which valued etiquette for ancestors very much. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 because of the value of Jongmyo's buildings and 600-year ritual events. Jongmyo Jeryeak(important intangible cultural property, composed by King Sejong), a music played with dance during rituals with Jongmyo Jerye(important intangible cultural property), was registered as a UNESCO Human Verbal and Intangible Heritage Masterpiece in 2001. The Jongmyo ritual is held on the first Sunday of May every year.
