The Story of an Exceptional Immersive Experience at the Montreal Science Centre

Hello Steemians,
There are places that we visit without too many expectations, and yet, through the quality of their staging, the richness of their content and the emotion they arouse, leave a lasting impression on the visitor's mind, this was exactly the case during my visit to the Montreal Science Centre, where, accompanied by my son Yahya, I had the privilege of participating in an immersive expedition entitled The Horizon of Cheops – A Journey to Ancient Egypt, a striking virtual reality experience that combines historical knowledge and cutting-edge immersive technologies to offer the public a unique immersion into the mysterious world of the pharaohs.

Upon entering the exhibition space, we were enveloped in a hushed, subdued atmosphere, with warm tones evoking the sand and stones of the Egyptian desert, while on either side of the introductory corridor, a series of illustrated educational panels presented in a clear and accessible manner the main stages of the construction of the Pyramid of Cheops, its architectural features, the mysteries it still conceals, as well as the numerous hypotheses formulated by researchers in an attempt to uncover the secrets of this thousand-year-old monument.

What is immediately striking is the extreme care taken with the scenography: the floor and walls are covered with geometric shapes in black and white, creating a disturbing visual effect that deliberately disorients the landmarks to better prepare the visitor for the total immersion that awaits them. Barefoot, as if to reconnect with a certain symbolic stripping, we were invited to wait in an antechamber where we received instructions, before equipping ourselves with a 360° virtual reality headset.
From the moment the headset is activated, we find ourselves transported inside the Pyramid of Cheops, which we can explore freely, at our own pace, following a guided but unconstrained route, what makes this experience particularly remarkable is the quality of the reconstructions: the textures of the stones, the play of light and shadow, the grandiose volumes of the galleries, everything is rendered with an impressive fidelity that really gives the illusion of being present, there, in this funerary sanctuary more than 45 centuries old.

We visited the king's chamber, the great gallery, the access corridors, the suspended protective covers, and even the areas inaccessible to the real public, revealed here thanks to the latest data from scanners and the most recent archaeological research. Yahya, although young, immediately understood the exceptional aspect of this adventure, asking a thousand questions and observing every detail with attention, it was a true moment of intergenerational transmission, in a setting that was both fun and scientific.
On the way out, as if to prolong this immersion, we discovered a souvenir shop inspired by ancient Egypt, full of refined and symbolic objects: statuettes representing the goddess Bastet, handcrafted notebooks with oriental motifs, mini golden pyramids, jewelry, incense, postcards of Egyptian landscapes.

And right next door, a soberly decorated café area allowed you to sit down with a hot drink, in a hushed and calm, almost meditative atmosphere, as if to gently return to reality after this extraordinary journey.
