There are times when we fervently and instinctively desire to help those we love, the wisest resource is to trust in God and let Him guide us.

He also said: A man had two sons. 12 The younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of the goods that falls to me; and he divided the goods between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went into a far country, and there he squandered his property with riotous living. 14 When he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he longed to fill his belly with the husks that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee. 19 I am no more worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. And while he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22 But the father said unto his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it upon him; and put a ring upon his hand, and shoes upon his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf, and kill it, that we may eat, and be merry: 24 For this son of mine was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to rejoice. 25 Now his eldest son was in the field; and when he came and drew near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked him what this meant. 27 And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him back safe and sound. 28 Then he was angry and would not go in. So his father went out and begged him to come in. 29 But he answered and said to his father, Behold, these many years I have served you, and I have never disobeyed you, and yet you have never given me even a young goat, that I might rejoice with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him. 31 Then he said to him, "Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."

Luke 15:11-32

This passage is one of the most used and most read when we talk about the parable of the prodigal son and we only stop to focus on the incomparable love of God that has been demonstrated by the father of the prodigal son. We rejoice when we understand that God loves us unconditionally even when we move away from him. But here the parable also gives us a lesson and we must love others.
We run in this parable that the father had every right to reject what his youngest son asked him, but the father already knew that his son's intention was different, he was already far from the place even though he was there. This shows us that even if we love a loved one the most, letting them go is also the hardest thing. There are times when we want to control the situation, even with the best intentions based on the love we have for the person, but this can be an obstacle in that person's path.
Just like the young man's father, once we let go, we must also have the patience to wait for God to work in that person's life. The father did not run out to find his son, he decided to fully trust God before trying to fix the current situation because of his impulses and thus somehow avoid the reckless consequences of his son.

On the day I fear,
I trust in you.

Psalm 56:3

To act like the father of the prodigal son, the first thing is to trust in God's plans. Even if we do not understand what it consists of, we must be certain that God's plans are only for our good and our development. God loves each person far beyond what we can imagine and understands us much more than we understand ourselves. Our task is to be attentive and pray for God to work in their lives and bring them home again.
