I certainly don't need religion to behave well and correctly and decently. I agree with your observation that people are changing. They have probably always done so and it is part of evolution. In the end, those who succeed best in adapting to external circumstances survive. I suspect it won't be the warriors...
Now it occurs to me that in fact a large part of external circumstances are circumstances that we ourselves, humans, create. If we are in some special situation now, it is because a large part of people wanted it and brought things to this point. In this line of thought, people do and should adapt to themselves, this is another paradox and nonsense.😁
I don't know if you have any idea how many people exist on this Earth who need instructions and explicit prompting for elementary daily activities, such as: not throwing my trash in nature, not killing that innocent creature in front of me (invertebrate or vertebrate), not hurting the person in front of me who has done nothing to me... Imagine what the situation is with the more complex things in life.
You're right: I have no such idea. May be because I don't want to imagine people, adult men and women, without such intrinsic motivation and rules...
