MY PEPPERED SNAILS FOR RECIPE-VIDEO CONTEST -18- ENTRY
Hello Everyone. I trust we’re all doing great and keeping fit and safe?
So today, I am presenting my entry into the steemfood contest.
My dish is peppered snails. Peppered snails is both a snack and street food in my country Nigeria. It’s a very spicy and mouth-watering dish.
Snails are very nutritious and wonderful alternative to beef and other red meat.
Snails are great sources of protein similar to beef and pork but the protein in snails have lower fat content.
They are also rich in Vitamin A, Omega-3 fatty acids, iron and calcium.
Just like fishes, snails are rich Omega-3 fatty acids thus very good for heart health.
They help to boost immune system and are great for eye health because of the presence of Vitamin A in them.
Their iron content helps the red blood to circulate blood round the body.
Snails are rich in calcium making them great catches for healthy bones. (Common knowledge really)
So, let’s get started.
MY PEPPERED SNAILS RECIPE
Ingredients
Snails (as required)
Alum
Fresh Cayenne peppers
Onions
Bouillon cube (optional)
Vegetable oil
Salt to taste
Procedures
- Break the snails and wash with alum to remove the slime. You can use lime in place of alum. This is the most important aspect of this dish because sand and dirts are trapped in the tongues of the snails. You must wash properly. Be careful also with breaking the snails to avoid cuts from the hard shells.
Grate the pepper, clean and slice the onions into rings and set aside.
Place your pot on fire, add some water (enough to cook the snails). Add the snails, some onions rings, salt to taste (snails don’t need much salt, so a little bit would do) and the bouillon cube and cover the pot with the lid to cook.
While the snails are cooking, set another pot or frying pan on fire to heat a little, add a big spoon of vegetable oil, add the grated pepper and stir for a bit.
Add some onions and stir for a bit. Now check your snails to see if they’re cooked and if yes, pick the snails and add to the already made sauce and mix properly for about 1 minute.
Now, your peppered snails is ready. You can serve as a side dish with rice or snacked with your favorite drinks.
