In preparing my herbal garlic ketchup, I followed the lessons closely as outlined by our dear tutor, @afzalqamar. Below are the steps I followed:
Gathering the ingredients: |
- I sourced my fresh tomatoes from the nearby market
- White vinegar from a supermarket
- Garlic from the market
- Sugar from supermarket
- Chilli pepper from a nearby shop
- Salt from the one I have at home
 | it was actually @bossj23 that helped me with the purchases of vinegar, fresh tomatoes, sugar and garlic |
Items | amount in Naira(N) | amount in steem |
Vinegar | 3300 | 20.257 |
Fresh tomatoes | 1500 | 9.357 |
Sugar | 550 | 3.436 |
Garlic | 1000 | 6.25 |
Chilli pepper | 100 | 0.625 |
Salt | from home | -- |
Total | N6460 | 39.925 |
 | the picture of the ingredients |
Vinegar | 1/2 cup |
Fresh tomatoes | 1kg |
Sugar | 1/2 cup |
Chilli pepper | to taste |
Garlic | at least 6 gloves (I considered the sizes) |
Salt | to taste |
 | when I weighed the fresh tomatoes to be sure it's 1 kg |
- First, I washed my fresh tomatoes thoroughly in a salty water, I sliced them and put in a pot, then add a 1/2 cup of water. I then placed it on a low heat to dry the water.
the diced tomatoes
- Then I peeled the garlic and added to the tomato on fire and allowed to cook more for 5 minutes
 | the garlic in the tomato before placing it back in the fire |
- Then I brought it down and turned into my juicer and blended to paste
 | the tomato in the blender or Juicer |
- Next, I turned it into my strainer or sieve so that I can remove the seeds or lumps in it.
during and after straining
- I turned it to a clean bowel and added my salt to taste, chilli pepper and sugar according to the required quantities.
when adding the pepper, sugar and salt to the paste
- I mixed them thoroughly and returned them to my pot, placed on fire on a low heat and stirred continuously so that it doesn't burn
 | staring continuously so that it doesn't burn |
- After about 5 minutes of stirring, I added the vinegar and stirred continuously untill I got the consistency that is required as you can see in the picture
adding the vinegar
It was ready after it thickens. Then I served some of it with fried potatoes as you can see below, while I airtight the remaining in a container

Did you face any difficulty in the preparation of the ketchup at home? |
I faced a little challenge sourcing the grape vinegar until I saw the comment under the tutorial post that advised that we can use white vinegar. It was a relief. Even at that, I couldn't find it close to me . I had to call bossj23 who was close to a market to help me buy it. Thankfully, he was able to buy it for me.
Another challenge I faced was juicing the tomatoes due to power outage. I had to buy petrol to use the generator to power the juicer.
Apart from these 2 above, nothing else was a challenge for me. I only read the tutorial to be able to understand the steps involved and followed it thoroughly.
What do you say about the taste and freshness of the homemade ketchup which you have prepared as compared to the market ketchup? |
Homemade ketchup is best. It's fresher, healthier and tastes great 👍 and better compared to the one in the market. I am not a fan of ketchup anyways but I used it when I prepared pizza at home. Then, I bought it from the market. That one was dark in colour and tastes sour, and wasn't fresh at all. But this is different.
However, when next I will make my herbal garlic tomato ketchup, I will like to adjust the sugar quantity. I will rather use 1/3 cup of sugar instead of 1/2 cup. It is my choice anyways.
Thanks a million for this lesson. In deed, nothing is impossible. Preparing our own food is the best if we have all it takes. I am glad I have done it. I want to invite @nsijoro @okere-blessing and @m-fdo to take part. The tutorial post is here
When I bought tomato ketchup for my sister in De choice shopping mall and saw the price I was surprised because just a bottle of this item cost over 3000 naira, I didn't check it's content though, buh, i am glad the contest organizer is going to be showing us how to make it ourselves and not just that but it's health benefits... I will try to be a partaker, good luck on the contest...🤝
Thanks a million. We are lucky to be part of Steemit where recipes of this nature is shared. What might have contributed to it's price might have been the vinegar
Vinegar???, i just checked the container thinking you might be wrong and boom I saw natural vinegar as part of the ingredients and also I saw spices which contains celery, you are really good at this, it seems you know more on ketchup, I will be following up this contest to also learn from you...
Well, I followed up the tutorial from our Steemit challenge tutor closely. Yes, it is part of the ingredients. You really need to follow up. Homemade recipes are the best especially if it's from professionals

Your homemade tomato and garlic ketchup looks fantastic. I really like how you carefully followed each step, overcame challenges like sourcing vinegar and dealing with power outages, and still achieved such a fresh, tasty result. Serving it with fried potatoes was a perfect idea, and it’s great that you noticed the difference in freshness and flavor compared to store-bought ketchup.
