Helpful Tips for New Steemians to Cut OUT the Spam!

In this blog, I will be focusing on three spam methods that I am noticing to be more and more prevalent on this platform:

  1. Spam Comments
  2. Spam Private Messages
  3. Miscategorization of Content & issues with photo authenticity

I will ensure readers understand WHY these actions are NOT GOOD for the Steemit platform. If any newcomers have questions on something I did not make clear, please comment.

So, we shall start with spam comments. What are spam comments? Let's delve into it. The biggest type of spam comments I see are when users leave "comments" consistent of link drops in attempt to direct the author of the blog to their post. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR. Myself & many other Steemians have said it simply - Steemit is NOT a get rich quick platform. Newsflash - it was not designed to be!!

If you are frustrated that your posts aren't making much or feel you aren't getting visibility, placing links in other's posts is NOT going to help you one bit. You're likely to get flagged and deservedly so. Doing this makes YOU LOOK BAD. It makes you look very disrespectful as well. You are not entitled to the author reading your blog just because you upvoted their post. It takes TIME & PATIENCE to gain a followership on steemit. Some ways to get your links out there that are okay:

  • Join discord! There are plenty of places there you can promote your links to include the minnow support group as one example. There's a plethora of discord groups you can get involved in.
  • Join a Facebook steemit group. There are also a plethora of those. I have one actually called Steemit Dreamit.
  • When joining said groups be careful to avoid SPAMMING in them by ensuring you don't post the same link over and over. In my group that gets deleted. Accidents happen obviously. The same applies within FB groups regarding commenting do not spam your link into someone else's post. That's strictly forbidden in my group as well.
  • There are rare times that it is "okay" to put a link in someone's post & that would be accompanied with a thoughtful explanation as to WHY your link was at all relavent.

Plopping your links in other's comments is a backhanded "upvote for upvote" because, that's basically what you are doing. SO DON'T! Another way to get more people looking at your blogs is by simply being a good follower!! You can start by actually reading what your commenting on instead of saying "nice post." That isn't memorable. I can tell you right now the users who simply say "nice" or other equivalent phrases that show me they didn't really read it, don't grab my attention and therefore, I'll probably NEVER end up following them. If you are being genuine on my blogs on a consistent basis I will usually end up following you & checking out your content. I think I speak for most established Steemians when I say that.

Next, we will discuss another common spammy thing I am noticing which is spam private messages. I will not spend as much time on this one. This is when one sends a PM to another Steemian with, you guessed it - a link drop! This happens more often than you might think. In fact, between Facebook & Discord, this happens to me multiple times a week & usually from complete strangers. DON'T DO IT!! It is rude & uncalled for. I don't know of many people who'd actually check out your post after such an action.

Besides link dropping, I personally have had completely random strangers PM with other strange requests, comments, or questions - to include: am I single? Guess what, if I don't know you will not be getting a response and depending on the nature of your message, you might not enjoy what response you do get. In short, if you don't know the Steemian & don't have a damn good question, DON'T private message them!!

My last topic has to deal with miscategorization of content & photo authenticity. A lot of what I am seeing in regards to this essentially equates to laziness on behalf of the author.

We all notice "trendy" tags like, for example, the seven day black and white photo challenge or the #celestialchallenge. There are MANY popular photo challenges here on Steemit. If you are going to participate, at least be smart enough to LEARN about what you are participating in. Most of these challenges were initiated by SPECIFIC Steemians. For example @dswigle initiated #marketfriday. So, it might (read: would) be a great idea for me to mention that in my post. That is giving her the credit she deserves for coming up with the idea.

It might also be a good idea to know what the challenge actually entails. The #celestialchallenge doesn't mean you can just plop down photos of the sun and moon everyday. Do your research & find out what the challenge is all about!!

As for photos, please consider watermarking them IF YOU TOOK THE PHOTO. You don't have to but it does help with authenticity. Consider also letting us know a little backstory to your photo & what you took it with.

I can't tell you how many times I have seen photo plops with absolutely no explanation of where it came from. You really should not be using ANY images that aren't yours, period! Especially without sourcing it, & even then it's a big GRAY area. Sourcing is not enough many times. I doubt you took the time to get permission to use it. Speaking of which I'll just go ahead and let you guys know, I created the header image you see in this post MYSELF using the Sketch app.

Using someone else's material in your post without permission is theft & has resulted in lawsuits on other platforms. So, I wouldn't be surprised if that could happen here & that wouldn't be good for Steemit or YOU, now would it? Yeah that's right, I didn't think so.

With the explosion of new Steemians, I thought this would be a good time to share this post. Many of you are awesome. Some of you may not understand what you are doing is spam. If someone is NICE enough to let you know you are spamming, getting defensive & acting a fool makes YOU look bad and even, unintelligent. You're lucky someone tried to explain it to you versus just outright flagging, although it would be acceptable if they did. I would hope you'd learn from it. I would say maybe 1 out of every 20 people I try to educate that what they're doing is spam respond well. For those that do - good you just showed me & others you're a mature adult and an individual who is receptive and willing to improve.

Down the line, I wouldn't be surprised if more harsh penalties for spamming were instituted. I was chatting with my friend @ilovedietcoke recently. She had an idea that say, after three flags you get a temporary ban from posting. Her intents with this were based on users flagging for the RIGHT REASONS. I'm unsure if this would work on Steemit currently since there is unfortunately a lot of people in petty flag wars NOT related to what I have discussed in this post.

Alright that will wrap things up for this blog. If you are interested in learning more about being successful on this platform, feel free to check out my post on gaining an organic following:

Sort:

I was guilty early on of dropping my link in another related blog. Very embarrassing when I read elsewhere that it was frowned upon! Never did that again. I get irritated with the posts that are just YouTube trailers for movies that are new, or a famous band video. If you didn’t make the video, you really shouldn’t be profiting from it, but some of those empty posts get a lot of upvotes. Anyway, good post with lots of good information.

It's less bad if it's related but obviously still not a good practice. Yeah early on there was a group I was involved with of which there became an issue because a member just plopped a you tube link and the lyrics. THAT'S IT. like no originality at all. I don't see how those posts make anything but there's a lot of stuff i don't get. Thanks for your comment and best of luck on your future steemit success.

Thanks! Yeah, I like to write about horror movie recommendations, and I was looking for other horror fans. The persons page I posted on was about movies, but I saw the error of my way. Steemit is a weird, but interesting place.

Sounds like you're getting the hang of it though :)

Good article.

I had someone on one of the FB groups spam me the other day with a link - considering that the group itself (not yours in this case) had an explicit rule forbidding such things... Obviously, I did not even bother to check out the link.

Good idea on watermarking images too - though do you know whether any of the photo competitions encourage this?

If someone is wanting to use an image which is not theirs (for instance, I like to share some spiritual messages on Sundays), there is always the bit on Google and Bing where you can search for something with appropriate user rights. Even then, the source should be credited as much as possible. Still, the safest thing to do is to stick with your own images and text. (I've seen where quotes can be copyrighted as well.)

All in all, the best future for Steemit is with using all our own materials and working for our organic followings.

Thanks again for your article.

(BTW, I hope you don't consider my graphic banner here to be spamming - I'm trying to use it as a signature that shows someone what I do without being a pest.)

No, I don't consider it spam, I know it's you so it just points out who you are =)
No most of the photo challenges don't per say require you to watermark them. As you've seen I use simple markings on my photos that are actually just called labels in my phones photo editing program.
There are some who are adamantly against the use of any images that aren't explicitly your own. However, I've always heard from being involved in the art community on fb that public domain images such as those from pixabay were okay again, stipulating that you say they're from pixabay. So maybe for the spiritual messages see what pixabay has.

I guess I'll pay attention to the winners and see if anyone is using a watermark there. Something that doesn't get in the way too much and yet makes it difficult to reuse by cropping.

I think my banner also brightens up the reply area. :-) (Though I still will normally only use it once per post - partly because I'm lazy, lol.)

Lol. Well it would become a bit redundant too probably in a string of replies. I don't think the watermark is a requirement at all. For you always seem to have a lot to say about your photos to include your process, what you use etc. Just if you didn't want the image stolen...

I joined a few upvote for upvote groups before I found steemit dreamit, and now I'm going to leave those groups. They were the only groups that came up in a steemit search on FB at first. Unfortunately there will always be users who only care about the get rich quick delusion. I'm here to make quality videos and recipe blogs and I'm only interested in associating people who truly like my content. I'm here for the long term. I want this site to grow. I don't want new users turned off with spam and scams. The best way is to ignore them. They're only interested in their own selfish interests and don't care if you succeed or not as long as they can cash out their 3 cents.

Yeah ignoring is an option. Unfortunately some don't take the hint and are stealing from the reward pool with this crap. I used to be in groups that were okay with upvote for upvote spam, etc . But now I'm only in three fb groups of which one is mine and these groups discourage the negative behaviours

Thanks for writing this post, I hope it gets to the ears of those who need it. Although I doubt the hard-core spammers will bother reading, proof is in the spammy comment you already got :(
I usually just ignore the spam comments and hope people will educate themselves. Good job on contributing to a less spammy Steemit!

Thanks a lot for the comment & support. Unfortunately you're right. :/
But one can try
Have a great day

Nice article. I'm afraid most of the "nice post!" guys won't bother reading it, but nonetheless very informative.
I have to say, as a minnow who's been active a little more than a week, I don't get the countless people who just leave spam comments on every thread. Don't they ever get bored? I've been focusing on commenting for now, because a) I'm trying to imagine what kind of content I'd like to be focusing on in the future by learning from others, and b) I'm starting to get acquainted with people who create stuff that I like, and I'm actually enjoying my time here, even if I don't make money. But NOT making money and NOT enjoying your time in any sort of discussion whatsoever, what's the point really?

You raise some good points. Obviously being able to make money on here is nice. A lot of people kinda dropped off the radar after I started when the sbd dropped. I kept on trucking along even when I wasn't making Much because...I ENJOY it here. Makes a huge difference. I get more satisfaction and fulfilment out of my interactions here than I did with years on Facebook.

Excellent post - very worthy of an Upvote and a Resteem. We need to educate, educate, educate!

Thanks very much, apprecaited!

We need more posts like this. More and more new people are joining and they have no idea about responsible ( and legal) blog posting and commenting! They simply see Steemit as a way to make money no matter what!

True and i find that despicable. It will turn away quality people too.

You would think that people would take the time to research how to do something properly and legally, but many think this is just another facebook. What they don't understand - is that no one but the photographer or artist has the right to profit from the images or artwork. In case they hadn't noticed, this is not facebook. Steemit is for profit, so usage is commercial!

Yeah exactly. I saw someone post a music video and copy paste the lyrics one time - THAT'S IT - and they got upvotes for it. Ugh

one of the annoying forms of spamming on steemit is when people comment on your post "Wow i LOVE it" or something and then you see that they didn't even upvote lol... its like, "really? for some reason i don't belive you " heheh

Oh yeah, to those people I've started asking what they liked so much about it. Then I usually don't hear back!

You stole my lines, that is what I have been asking people on my posts for months you LOL!!!!

I nearly dropped you a......... nice post

here but not!

....... they usually never take the effort to capitalize the N on nice post either LOL

Yep I have started asking those people what they "loved ' so much about it, then I don't usually hear back

Thank you for this post @Chelsea88! As we discussed last night, flagging is such a huge grey area and something I'd prefer not to waste my voting power on. There are times when I feel it's necessary and I will do it if it needs to be done. Its so frustrating to invest yourself in a post or a challenge to find that people are spamming your tag or the comments with things that have nothing to do with it. I posted last night about wanting to help build up the newer steemians in hope that they will learn good etiquette if it is modeled for them, we encourage their good behavior, and correct their poor behavior. I'm really tempted to focus on a specific newbie and maybe take on more as they grow and need the help less.

Anther golden nugget by you. A mentorship for willing new Steemians. Yep, your rag was a prime example of not understanding what a tag means. #tendaysofreflection is a photographic challenge and a simple read through of almost any post using the tag would tell you
A) who initiated it
B) what it is!

@Whatsup recently "adopted" @BrandyB and now she is looking to pair people for "adoption". I think it's an exciting idea....but it wasn't originally my idea. It's a shame I didn't come up with it, cause I think it's freaking brilliant! Here is the post where I read about it.

https://steemit.com/steeemit/@brandyb/minnow-adoption-rocks-2018-01-09-06-55-31

Interesting I just picked up @brandb over in @eastcoaststeem
And yeah unless it was a mishap I ALWAYS credit whoever came up with the actual challenge... seems like common sense but we all know that's not so common anymore

Oh yeah, it was always steemians that I don't know....I'm thinking they assume if they got tagged then the person who tagged them initiated the challenge, I don't think its malicious.

Lol, I've seen several posts where someone credits another steemian with hosting/initiating the challenge and I'm like..."um, that was me but whatevs...." but I don't say anything.

Happens to me too. I have had a couple of tags hijacked, even though the posts are not even relevant. I even used my own tag for a while just to help me keep track of all my posts and then people started using it! so, I just gave up using it. I’ll need to check to see if it is still being used, because it is associated with my business. Lol!

That's crazy. I really don't get why people use tags they don't understand!

We have a lot of people who don't understand English, so they don't know what the tags mean. Sad, really.

Yes I’ve noticed this also.

Honestly I wonder whether language barriers contribute to this.

Fair point, that could be the case in some instances

Having said that, I don’t go upvoting posts I can’t read or go spamming people for an upvote-for-upvote thing when it’s clear I haven’t read or are engaging in the discussion.

That's good, seems some just don't care

I did not know that we could PM each other...not sure how that would be done. I'm not too techy, still figuring things out here and gosh I would hate to accidentally PM someone. Maybe you could PM me and then I would get how that is done. Wait, light bulb may have just gone off here, I see the lil bird & the big F in the right side of the screen and I believe I had an "aha" moment. I haven't ever done that...you're right, that would be awkward at best & rude w/o being invited. Thanks for the helpful posts :) <3

Well I was talking about messages on discord and FB actually =)
But I'm glad you agree hehe
