Among my favourite additions to the stack are two unmistakably charming pieces from one of the UK’s most dedicated silver artisans — @backyardbullion. These 1oz hand-poured silver stars, each lovingly crafted and hallmarked, are more than just bullion — they’re characterful works of art.
Both stars were poured in 2017, proudly marked with the letter ‘s’, and each carries the full suite of hallmarks from the Edinburgh Assay Office — including the famous castle mark, a visual signature that not only verifies authenticity but also adds a dash of medieval flair. There’s also the BYB maker’s mark, a stamp of the passion and personal pride poured (literally) into each piece.
One of the things I truly admire about Backyard Bullion is his commitment to transparency and trust. Every piece he produces is independently tested by the Edinburgh Assay Office for purity and weight, giving collectors like me peace of mind that we’re getting exactly what’s promised. It’s a level of scrutiny not always found in the poured silver world — and it comes at a cost.
Because hallmarking isn’t cheap, BYB’s pieces are often priced a little higher than other pourers. But for me, that slight premium is absolutely worth it. You're not just paying for silver — you're paying for integrity, provenance, and a piece of the UK’s long-standing hallmarking tradition.
And here’s a fun bit of BYB trivia I love to share: Why did he choose Edinburgh for his hallmarking? The answer is brilliantly simple — because it has a castle as its hallmark, and castles look cool. That’s the kind of honest and quirky thinking that makes collecting BYB pieces so enjoyable.
