The forgotten metals: Why platinum (and Palladium) deserve a spot in your stack...

Platinum Mene charms
When most people think of precious metals stacking, gold and silver obviously dominate the conversation! They’re the classic duo, steeped in history, tradition, and universal recognition.... But there’s a pair of often overlooked metals that deserve a (small) place in any well-rounded collection: platinum and palladium. These metals don’t just sit quietly in the background, they play a vital role in technology and industry, and they may be one of the most interesting ways to diversify your stack(in my opinion).
Platinum has a history as rich as gold, once considered more valuable due to its rarity and dificulty to work with. It’s dense, resistant to tarnish, and widely used in automotive catalytic converters, jewelery, and medical equipment. Its industrial demand means its price can swing more dramatically than gold, but that volatility can be an opportunity. For stackers who like to speculate, platinum offers an exciting play ,historically, when platinum dips below gold, it’s been seen as undervalued compared to its long-term ratio.
Palladium, on the other hand, has been the quiet star of the last decade. Its price soared to record highs in recent years as demand for catalytic converters outstripped supply, making it briefly more expensive than gold. It’s the most reactive of the platinum group metals and incredibly efficient at scrubbing polution from exhaust fumes, which is why car manufacturers can’t get enough of it. While prices have cooled recently, the fundamental demand isn’t going away, and future supply constraints could drive it higher again.

What makes platinum and palladium so compelling to me as a stacker is that they remind us why we buy metals in the first place — scarcity, utility, and intrinsic value. These aren’t just shiny objects; they’re critical materials that the modern world cannot function without. Adding even a small amount to your collection — a single ounce of platinum or a fractional palladium bar — opens your stack to a new layer of diversification.
