Every now and then, The Royal Mint releases something that perfectly blends historic symbolism with modern bullion craftsmanship—and their latest release does just that. The 2025 Una and the Lion 1oz Silver Bullion Minted Bar is a bold, beautiful tribute to one of the most iconic stories in British numismatic history, and I couldn’t resist taking a closer look.

Struck in 999.9 fine silver, this is the second design in the Royal Mint’s bullion bar series inspired by the epic tale of Una and the Lion, originally told in Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene. For those unfamiliar, it’s the story of a virtuous princess who tames a ferocious lion with her purity and courage—a tale of strength and guidance that’s resonated for generations.

The new design, brought to life by Thomas T. Docherty, is a modern take on the classic 1839 William Wyon £5 coin, showing Lady Una leading the lion with grace and quiet authority. And as with the original, the Latin motto ‘DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS’—‘May God direct my steps’—is beautifully inscribed across the bar. What stands out is the craftsmanship. The finish is crisp, detailed, and really does justice to Wyon’s timeless legacy. The bar is individually sealed in an exclusive blister pack, making it not only well protected but also highly presentable—ideal for display or storage.
