When we’re gone: The legacy of a precious metals stack

We spend years, nay, sometimes decades, carefully building our stacks. Each coin and bar tells a story: the day silver dipped and you “backed the truck up,” the gold sovereign you bought to mark a milestone, the rare piece you hunted for months before finally adding it to the collection. But here’s the question few of us like to ask: What happens to our stack when we’re gone?

It’s a sobering thought, but also a necessary one. Our stacks aren’t just pieces of metal, they are a transfer of wealth, a store of time, effort, and intention. If we do nothing, our families may not understand the value of what we’ve left behind. Worse, our carefully built stacks might get sold for face value at the bank, or quickly offloaded for cash without a thought. For me, this is personal. Whilst im not planning on dying anytime soon, my plan is simple: everything will be left to Mrs Welshstacker. Alongside my will, I’m leaving her clear instructions on how to distribute the stack between our two children. It’s my way of giving them both a leg up on the housing ladder one day, while ensuring Mrs Welshstacker never goes short in her later years. That’s what stacking is really about ,security, continuity, and a legacy that outlives us.

We often talk about stacking as a hedge against inflation, a financial insurance policy, or a way to preserve purchasing power. But there’s a philosophical side to all of this too. Precious metals have been used for thousands of years as a way to pass wealth between generations — from pharaohs buried with gold, to pirates’ treasure chests, to sovereigns tucked away for a rainy day. Your stack is part of that long tradition. So maybe it’s time to have "the conversation". Talk to your partner or significant other about what your stack means to you and what you want it to mean for them. Show them where it is, explain its value, and share your vision for how it should be used.

Because here’s the truth: our stacks aren’t just for us. They’re for the people we love, the people who come after us. And when the time comes, knowing your metals will carry forward your story — and maybe give your family the start in life they need — might just be the greatest treasure of all.
