Hello Steemians

Some concerts, other than being solely entertaining, end up becoming, in fact, a genuine common foible, and on August 13 there was the rare chance to taste a bit of improvisation with national stars without too much forward booking by the time Tunisian diva Sofia Sadek mounted Théâtre Antique de Carthage. An all-night of song, female power, and culture.

The Arrival

The Roman Theatre was filled with laughing people. It was made up of families, friends, and lovers queued under the banners for the Festival International de Carthage, laughing in anticipation of the evening show. Vendors were omitting the entrance of OMSI with lights and banners, turning it into a holiday bazaar.

Stepping Into History

So, this is the way I feel when walking straight up into the Carthage amphitheatre; to me, history still whispers into time ticking-toking, spotlights hang their arms out of the night sky and seats made out of stone fill one after another after one. The murmur grew into something almost approaching anticipation, the crowd slowly gaining in energy.

Sofia Sadek Takes the Stage

The crowd in the theatre exploded in cheers when Sofia Sadek entered. In the white dress, that authority and dignity in her role embodied. It was amazing how far her voice carried on those stones of the Romans. Adding to the magic, of course, was a kaleidoscope visual playing across massive LED screens flanking where she stood singing timeless classics and new material penned for the night that echoed throughout against women's perseverance and grace. Under that was a lush 60-piece orchestra and choir, filling the songs with extra layers of sound. The crowd got into the songs, barking with rhythmic applause and calling out appreciation after high notes.

The theatre came alive with lights, music, and the shared spirit of the crowd.

There was dance music from a sound system, lights moving around the theatre and suddenly there was this funny smoke coming down from somewhere above, and now everyone had all that in common after each looking for it alone.

A Celebration of Women

It was more than a concert, it was the laying of some flesh on that homage. Just like Sofia Sadek who speaks about women in society & culture, but the fact that she happens to have her show on Tunisia's National Women's Day makes it even more meaningful. Each digit sung freedom, creativity, and homage.

That combination of those traditional rhythms and new arrangements; that for me is the ultimate reflection-polarised like Tunisia of being so rooted in tradition, but at the same time always open to constant renewal.

An Emotional Connection

There was not a single performance that was devoid of feeling and the dynamic range from sensual ballads to anthems. The audience hushed in awe for airs, rose clapping and singing and shouting for Sofia after every reel. A night where love was above all, and music prevailed regardless of any cultural difference.

Walking Away With Music in My Heart

Finally, as the end of the melody drew near, a voice clapping: They slapped my hand first one, then another it was like that wave. They trailed out slowly, smiling softly to themselves and with a final note both the tune stopped and once more history, self, music were all gently woven together in labyrinthine ramparts of Carthage. This evening with Sofia Sadek was more than sufficient for me to prove music is not just a pure entertainment or pleasing source but it reconciles the testimony of our collective soul.
