It’s a genus of annual or perennial herbs or shrubs, sometimes succulent, sometimes with a fleshy or tuberous rootstock in the family of Lamiaceae which is found in the Old World tropics & subtropics. It’s widely used in folk medicine to treat conditions like cold, asthma, constipation, headache, cough, fever and skin diseases. Also used traditionally to treat digestive issues, respiratory ailments, and skin conditions, and it also exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory & antioxidant properties. Additionally, it may help with fever reduction & wound healing. The leaves of the plant are often eaten raw or used as flavoring agents, or incorporated as ingredients in the prep.
