It’s a succulent plant in the family of Euphorbiaceae. It’s native to the tropical Americas but is grown as an ornamental plant in many parts of the world due to its unusual appearance.

Most of its common names include Gout Plant, Guatemalan Rhubarb, Coral Plant, Buddha Belly Plant, Physic Nut, Goutystalk Nettlespurge, Australian Bottle Plant etc. Used in folk medicine as an analgesic, tonic, aphrodisiac, purgative, laxative, and to treat infections, intestinal worms, snakebite, gout & more.

Jatropha curcas is known for various medicinal uses. Its antimicrobial, anti-cancer and anti-HIV activity has been well recognized. Because of its broad-spectrum activity, we investigated aqueous and methanol leaf extracts for cytotoxicity and its potential to inhibit hemagglutinin protein of influenza virus.

Jatropha podagrica holds a longstanding place in traditional herbal medicine, primarily utilized for addressing skin infections, acting as antipyretics, diuretics & purgatives.
