Finding the greater truth -- this is great advice. It's not always easy to recognize what that greater truth is but like you said, we have to push ourselves as writers.

I think if you set out to tell a greater truth it will read that way (too on the nose). But if you let that greater idea--that thing that lasts long after the story ends--emerge through drafting, it will have an emotional impact.
For me, that's why I take stories through so many drafts. It's a layering process. This is also what makes writing stories so difficult...
