Most of the villages I have seen in my past had the community living sort of structure. People had their own homes, their own properties. But they always helped each other out on the living scenarios. Like for food, sharing stuff and also living to help each other. And it worked out for them before invaders arrived. In short it was a good experience for many community living villages but with time all fades away.
