Tesla Predicts and Avoids Serious Crash in Video

in #technology9 years ago

Self driving cars are under tremendous scrutiny for any type of failure, so it is nice to see proof of an autonomous car detecting an impending accident several vehicles ahead and taking action to protect is passengers. It happened on a freeway in the Netherlands on Dec 27th. The dash camera of the Tesla Model X captured the event.

The video is brutal, but know that nobody was seriously injured.

Tesla recently released an upgrade to their Autopilot system, which has steadily improved over time since its release. The new system relies more on radar, versus its cameras, which can detect issues in front of obstructions like other vehicles. In this case the autopilot recognized the impending accident, sounded an audible alarm to notify the driver and began applying the brakes. The driver indicated his response lagged that of the automatic safety controls.

This video gives me hope. Even if fully autonomous vehicles don’t become embedded in our lives in the near future, technology within our grasp can still help avoid accidents, reduce fatalities, and make the roads safer for everyone. Congratulations to Tesla, Elon Musk, and all the drivers who are avoiding accidents with the help of modern vehicle safety controls.

I am really excited to buy a Tesla in a few years. The $35,000 one might be in my price range. I drive other people around all day, it would be nice to be driven around for a change. It will also remove most human error, and prevent hundreds of deaths each year on highways.

By 2030 I hope we have many hyperloops between major cities and can easily travel all over the world. We have to create this world though, it won't happen unless we choose to do it. I personally do want to get a tesla and be driven around by the auto pilot. I have things to do, place to be, Steem to power up!

I couldn't agree with you more! The upcoming model is very affordable for a sporty all-electric vehicle. The pre-orders are already through-the-roof! If it is similar to the Model S, just smaller, then it should be a success.

I hope by 2030 we will have a much better, safer, and more economical transportation system here in the U.S. But I am not holding my breath.

I've been following Tesla news for a while, so this one is very hopeful.

Same. I have been drooling over a Model S for years. They are expensive cars.

me too. I even applied to work for tesla. I've been wanting a Tesla ever since learning about them.

I have considered working for them as well! Perhaps someday we will be co-workers.

Machine learning could really drive the number of accidents. Since its one of the biggest killers, this means a greater increase in the population. But who knows if ill be the shmuck that is saved by this tech. On another note, I don't like driving so cant wait.

Interesting perspectives!

I really like this technology, thanks for sharing, Mrosenquist!

Yes ! Tesla and Elon Musk really are genius ! This is definitely the future ! Thanks for sharing !👍😉

I think history will look back on Elon Musk as one of the great visionaries of our time.

Thank a lot for your update IT news.

I hope you enjoyed it or that it made you think about autonomous vehicles.

The tech behind this is incredible. Tesla is a true humanitarian. Thanks for sharing!

I find that both the technology and his willingness to push forward the market is equally incredible.

I agree. He would be one person that would be great to sit down and have a long conversation with.

Sign me up for that!

WoW spectaculair video! I love the idea of self driving cars. I hate the time I have to waste in cars driving to clients or holidays. Also when this becomes mainstream I no longer have to own a car I can just order one when I need one.

Personally I am split. I really do enjoy driving, but sometimes I would like to sit back and have an autonomous car do the work. What I am really excited about is this technology may reduce the number of incompetent and dangerous drivers out there. They are frustrating! So I am all for it. If people want to be talking on their phone instead of driving, then this tech is the right direction.
