Gokarneshwor Temple
Gokarneshwor Temple, also known as Gokarneshwor Mahadev, is one of the most revered Hindu temples in Nepal, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Gokarna, about 10 km northeast of Kathmandu, on the banks of the Bagmati River. The temple holds great religious, cultural, and historical significance, especially for worshippers who come to honor their ancestors.

Historical and Religious Significance

The temple is believed to be centuries old, with origins linked to ancient legends in Hindu scriptures.

According to mythology, Lord Shiva himself appeared here in the form of Gokarneshwor to bless devotees.

It is considered a highly sacred site for performing Shraddha (ancestral rituals), especially during Gokarna Aunsi (Father’s Day in Nepal), when thousands of devotees gather to pay homage to their deceased fathers.

Architecture

Built in traditional pagoda style, the temple showcases intricate wood carvings and metalwork.

The main shrine houses a sacred Shivalinga of Gokarneshwor Mahadev.

Surrounding the temple are smaller shrines dedicated to other Hindu deities, as well as centuries-old stone inscriptions.

Gokarna Aunsi Festival

Gokarna Aunsi (Bhadra Krishna Aunsi) is the most important festival here.

On this day, people offer prayers, flowers, rice, and other offerings to Lord Shiva for the peace of their ancestors’ souls.

The Bagmati River banks near the temple are filled with devotees performing rituals from early morning.

Natural Setting

The temple lies in a peaceful environment surrounded by forests, adding to its spiritual atmosphere.

The nearby Gokarna Forest is also famous as a wildlife reserve, making it both a religious and natural attraction.
