MY LIFE AS A FOREIGNER TEACHING IN RURAL THAILAND

in #thailand2 months ago

When I left western Kenya for Thailand, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard about the country's beautiful beaches, spicy food and friendly people but nothing could have prepared me for the rich, colorful journey that lay ahead in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

A NEW CHAPTER IN SOUTHERN THAILAND.
I currently teach in a small rural school in southern Thailand .The first thing I noticed was how peaceful and green everything felt. Life moves at a slower pace here, and people genuinely take time to smile and greet each other even strangers.

The school I teach at is filled with energy. My students are absolutely lovely but don't be fooled! They are also incredibly playful and cheeky, which keeps me on my toes every single day. Teaching here isn't just about lessons it's about forming bonds with children who see you not just as a teacher but as a big sister, auntie or even a friend.

CULTURE, FOOD AND DAILY LIFE
One of the biggest joys of living in Thailand is the food .From flavorful curries to fresh fruits i had never seen before, every meal feels like an adventure. And let me not even start on the street food, its cheap, spicy and addictive.
The people In Nakhon Si Thammarat are warm and welcoming. Even though I'm a foreigner always felt safe, accepted and appreciated especially at school.

But life here also comes with surprises .I was shocked the first time I saw people removing their shoes before entering offices or churches. It's a small gesture, but one that speaks volume about respect in Thai culture. Another surprise was the unique way Thais worship their temples, rituals and quiet reverences are so different from what I grew up with, but deeply beautiful.

FUNNY MOMENTS AND LIFE LESSONS
One day, a little boy from my class tried to teach me how to say a sentences in Thai. I trusted only to find out later I had been walking around saying something completely silly to other teachers! We all laughed so hard. It reminded me that while I'm here to teach, I'm here also to learn.

A WORD TO OTHER FOREIGNERS
If you are thinking about moving to Thailand to teach, especially in a rural area, do it. Be ready to step out of your comfort zone, learn a new language, and embrace new customs. You will grow in ways you never imagined.

LOOKING AHEAD
For me, Thailand has become more than just a work destination. Its home. I plan to stay long time because this country has given me peace, purpose and a new perspective on life.
