If they're people they have both names and identities. Whilst it could be people doing it for shits and giggles, I suspect from the rhetoric that is people from within the crypto-community.
Or it could be an inside job to help promote more users showing how well and fast they can deal with security breaches. Big corporations do this now including Apple. All of it could be orchestrated but what do I know.
