Mason Greenwood: The Talent We’re Too Scared to Believe In/ The world of sports

I still remember that first goal

As a Manchester United fan, there's no way I can ever forget how I felt watching Mason Greenwood play for the first time. That boy didn’t just kick a ball, he whispered to it. Left foot, right foot, tight angles, impossible finishes… the kind of goals you don’t teach, you just admire. In my opinion, Greenwood wasn’t just the future of United, he was England’s future too.

But then… everything stopped.

One moment, and the world turned on him

In early 2022, headlines exploded with accusations against Greenwood — serious ones. Allegations of assault. The kind of news that breaks the internet, divides opinion, and stains a name faster than any red card ever could. Manchester United suspended him, fans went quiet, sponsors ran. It was like everyone washed their hands of him.

The thing is, the case was later dropped. Charges were withdrawn. And I’m not here to argue the legal side — but if we’re going to say “innocent until proven guilty,” then why does it still feel like the world is punishing him?

He didn’t disappear. He fought back. Quietly.

When he went on loan to Getafe in Spain, many people thought he’d flop. But let me tell you — he delivered. 10 goals, 6 assists, electric performances, and even a Player of the Month award in a foreign league. The boy didn’t sulk. He didn’t rant. He just let his football talk.

And guess what? Clubs started watching again. Big clubs. Barcelona. Atletico Madrid. Marseille. Even Premier League teams. You’d think this is where his redemption begins, right?

But they still treat him like a PR problem

Now here’s where the concern truly kicks in for me. You see, many clubs are interested, but they’re also scared. Scared of social media. Scared of headlines. Scared of fans saying, “Why are you signing a controversial player?”

So instead of boldly giving him a second chance, they’re tiptoeing. Some clubs are even waiting for another team to make the first move — like they need permission to believe in him again.

I wept bitterly seeing how difficult it could be for someone to be accepted and trusted once again. I mean, what’s the point of clearing someone’s name if people still treat him like he’s still guilty now, and perhaps forever?

Is talent not enough anymore?

In this same football world:

We’ve seen players return after prison sentences.

We’ve watched clubs defend players with worse reputations.

Some even protect players under investigation, without dropping them.

But Greenwood, who hasn’t played in England since 2022, is being treated like football’s black sheep. And in my opinion, if his name was "Rodrigo" or "Mbappé" or "João Félix," we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. The world forgives foreigners faster than they forgive their own.

Greenwood's career is at a crossroads — and we're all watching

Now the 2025/2026 season is coming, and Greenwood is clubless. Marseille wants to keep him, but he may want a return to England. Premier League clubs are circling, but none have taken that bold step yet. The talent is there. The hunger is there. But the support? Still hanging in the balance.

If we let this boy fade away because of fear and PR pressure, then we’ve lost the plot. Because in this life, people deserve a second chance, especially when they’ve been legally cleared and proven they’ve grown.

Why I care — and why you should too

This is more than just football to me. This is about how quick we cancel people and how slow we are to believe they can change. Greenwood was just 20 when everything crashed. Imagine your entire life changing in one week — and even after the storm passes, people still look at you sideways.

I would’ve loved to see him shine again at United. That dream is probably over. But rising again is all I want for him, to prove the haters and doubters wrong, and to proof to the world that everyone deserves second chance.

As long as we are humans, we are bound to make mistakes and we are bound to fall. Let’s not pretend that perfection is the requirement for talent. Greenwood is young, gifted, and stronger than people think. If clubs can’t see that, then maybe it’s time fans remind them.

Final words from Deportal

I know that not everyone is comfortable with what happened back then concerning our own Greenwood, and that's fine. But let's find a place in our heart to receive him as the prodigal son. Let's not ignore the present. Don’t act like this boy didn’t fight his way back, with silence, humility, and pure football. As a true Manchester United fan, as a true football lover, I find a place in my heart to accept the 2nd coming of Mason Greenwood.

If we believe in second chances🌄, then we need to prove it now that it matters. I believe in second chance and I have proven it. What about you reading this?

And to Mason Greenwood if you will ever come across my post, wherever you land next, just know there are still fans who believe in your game, your journey, and your comeback. Deportal loves you wholeheartedly ❤️
