Saludos/Bonjour/Hello, Steemit!
It’s a joy to kick off a fresh challenge season with La Ruta del Buen Comer for Week 1 I bring you a complete, story-style review of IGA extra in Québec, where generous hours, easy parking, and a smart mix of fresh counters and ready-to-cook ideas turn what could be a routine errand into a small ritual of calm choices and good food.
My experience (why this supermarket works for me)

Storefront – IGA extra
Stepping from a drizzly parking lot to this bright IGA extra façade, with its curved roofline and large windows, I felt the familiar sense that I was crossing a threshold from the weather into the bakery’s warmth, and because the doors open wide and fast the first breath inside already smells like bread and coffee, which sets the tone for a visit that is efficient, pleasantly paced, and thanks to clear bilingual signage and clean glass everywhere easy on the eyes.

Selfie in the central aisle
I keep to the “one selfie only” spirit and include this central-aisle photo inside the store, where you can see how the freezers, the snack aisle, and the generous walking space all line up in a way that lets you plan cross-aisle errands dessert that way, dairy this way without that frantic zig-zag that makes grocery trips feel like strategy games.
What you’ll find inside (services, layout, counters, and comfort)
Fishmonger – hub view
Under the big POISSONNERIE sign, the seafood hub places iced displays right beside a tidy rail of sauces and marinades, which means you can pick a fillet, reach for lemon-butter or tartar without moving your feet, and glide on to the next stop, an elegant little design choice that shrinks the time from idea to dinner.
Fresh fish counter – sushi grade visible
At the fish counter proper, long coral ribbons of salmon lie alongside white-flesh fillets and thicker steaks, with scallops cupped in shells and a central lane of sushi/sashimi-grade cuts set over immaculate ice, there is that faint ocean smell that reads as fresh rather than fishy, which is why even cautious shoppers reach for something a bit bolder.
Ready-to-cook butcher case
Facing it, the ready-to-cook case is a mosaic of weeknight solutions marinated chicken in glowing sunset sauces, skewers already threaded with peppers and onions, and a neat parade of sausages from pale bratwurst-style links to pepper-flecked varieties each tray portioned and labeled so one grab answers both “what’s for dinner?” and “how much do we need?”
Produce that makes you linger (prices on tags)

Misted greens wall
The misted greens wall is where I slow down: lettuce heads, herbs, celery, broccoli and a bright parade of peppers look newly picked under a cool veil of mist, and the tags I saw radishes $0.99, bell peppers $5.99/lb, lettuces $4.99, green onions $1.99 are large enough that planning salads happens almost by itself.

Watermelon wedges over ice
When you don’t need a whole fruit, the watermelon bar display shows red and sunshine-yellow wedges on crushed ice, cleanly wrapped and clearly $1.49/lb (with a “Valeurs sûres” card at $1.29/lb), which is the sort of thoughtful portioning that lets a Tuesday feel like dessert night.

Whole seedless melons – member price
If the crowd is hungry, the seedless melons come in a big bin with $7.99 each or $6.99 with Scene+, and I like that the sign itself shows a juicy cross-section, as if to pre-taste the chill before the melon settles into the cart.

Juice wall – breakfast decisions
I always sweep the chilled juice wall first because it reads like a rainbow of breakfast decisions pure orange shoulder-to-shoulder with blends, kombuchas, and plant milks so a whole week’s mornings can be planned by simply walking from left to right.

Middle aisles – snacks & frozen
Then, under warmer lights, the middle aisles offer chocolates, chips and a line of spotless freezer doors, and because the shelves are perfectly faced and the labels generous, comparing sizes and ingredients feels oddly relaxing rather than rushed.

Trunk shot – the haul
The visit ends with this trunk still-life eggs for breakfasts, towels and cleaning refills to prevent late-night runs, snack bars for long afternoons, and a brick of Duracell AAs because remotes never warn you first proof that calm choices inside translated into a peaceful, practical load-out.
Payments, hours, and little conveniences
- Hours: early morning to late evening (great before/after work).
- Payments: cash, debit, all major credit cards, tap-to-pay at staffed lanes and self-checkout.
- Loyalty: Scene+ integrates cleanly (member prices like the $6.99 melon actually show at the till).
- Amenities: easy parking, clean washrooms, tidy café/bakery corner, wide aisles, clear bilingual signage.
Five emblematic local staples I bought/found (brand & price)
For fresh produce, the “brand” is simply Produce/No brand, prices were read directly from the tags photographed above.
Product (Québec staple) | Brand | Price | Where seen |
---|---|---|---|
Seedless watermelon (whole) | Produce / No brand | $7.99 ea ($6.99 Scene+) | Member sign on bin |
Watermelon wedges (red) | Produce / No brand | $1.49/lb (“Valeurs sûres” $1.29/lb) | Ice table |
Watermelon wedges (yellow) | Produce / No brand | $1.49/lb (“Valeurs sûres” $1.29/lb) | Ice table |
Radishes (bunch) | Produce / No brand | $0.99 | Misted greens wall |
Bell peppers (mixed colors) | Produce / No brand | $5.99/lb | Produce wall |
The thing that surprised me
Among all the familiar sights, the yellow watermelon sitting right next to the classic red surprised me most, because the sunny flesh looks almost like mango at first glance, and that small jolt of novelty delivered by something as humble as a fruit display reminds me why supermarkets can still be places of discovery.
