The relationship between language and culture is an interesting thing to talk about, so it makes me and Steemit users from various backgrounds interested in discussing this. Through this contest I will present some interesting information regarding the language of my country, Indonesia. As a form of support for the contest, I call @irawandedy @heriadi and @f2i5 to participate.

What is the name of your country? How many languages can be found in your country?

Indonesia is known as an archipelagic country consisting of various tribes, languages and cultures. Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture's Language Agency, the number of regional languages in Indonesia is 718 languages. Indonesia is the second country with the most regional languages in the world after Papua New Guinea.

Among the listed languages in your country, how many are you familiar with?

As a native of Aceh, I know and can use our regional language (Aceh) very well. Our parents still use the regional language at home to communicate, while in our social life, we use Indonesian more often, especially in the work environment.

However, you also need to know that, as a province in Indonesia, each district also has its own ethnic language. Aceh consists of 13 tribes which automatically consist of 13 regional languages such as Acehnese, Gayo, Aneuk Jamee, Singkil, Alas, Tamiang, Kluet, Devayan, Sigulai, Pakpak, Haloban, Lekon, and Nias.

Among the many regional languages spread throughout Indonesia, I only know the popular regional languages such as Javanese, Batak, Sundanese, Madurese, Minangkabau, Betawi, Musi, Bugis, Banjar. I often hear conversations in that language on television shows, even though I can't communicate in that language, I can understand a little of the meaning of what they say.

How has this language improved/helped your life and business?

The quality of a person can be seen from the way he speaks, everyday language is not only used for talking but has a good message/meaning. Mastering many languages and their rules will really help someone in the process of developing their life or business.

In the past, language played an important role in a person's career, many accomplished diplomats or politicians who succeeded in writing gold ink generally mastered many national languages such as Bung Karno, Agus Salim, Buya Hamka and others. They are important figures in Indonesian history.

Even though currently communicating in different languages can be helped with various modern tools, language still has an important role in helping our lives or businesses. It should be noted that language is not just the pronunciation of the alphabet as a medium of communication, but more than that, language has values, history, culture and characteristics of a region or country. Through language we can interact and build stronger emotional relationships.

Are you willing to teach your children these languages? Yes/No. State your reason.

It is not just a desire but also an obligation for me to teach regional languages to children or the younger generation. We know that one of the important components that characterizes self-identity is language and they must be aware of where they come from and the language of their ancestors. As I said earlier, language is not only a means of communication but also the values, culture and local wisdom contained in it. Regional and national languages are the main languages that they know well before learning to develop themselves with other international languages.

Thank you for visiting and reading my article for the contest SEC WK2 : The language in my country. Hopefully this is useful and greetings!
