The photographic appointments #33 : William Vandivert
William "Bill" Vandivert (1912-1989) was an American photographer and cofounding member of the photo agency Magnum Photos.
Vandivert studied 1928-1930 chemistry at Beloit College and 1930-1935 at the Chicago Institute of Art. From 1935 Vandivert began making the first pictures; For example for Examiner Herald in Chicago. A little later, he worked as a full-time employee for the famous magazine Life. In December 1938 Vandivert moved to London, England to work for life in Europe. Until 1945, it is an account of the Second World War in Europe. Here he met photographer Robert Capa, who can win for his idea of an independent photo agency. Vandivert left the 1946th Life Magazine
With his wife Rita Vandivert is 1947 founding member of the photo agency Magnum Photos. Both leave Magnum, but the following year. William continued his career as a freelance photographer. However, the Vandiverts are, for a series of documents on the nature is known.
He was the first Western photographer to have entered the Führerbunker, or a shelter for the leader, after the fall of Berlin, and a handful of his photos of the bunker and ruined city were published in LIFE magazine in July 1945.
