Steem Solar Lesson 3: Solar Photovoltaic(PV) Modules

Hello Students,

It's another Class in Steem Solar Lessons, and I am glad that we are making progress So Far and we will continue to make progress.

Welcome to today's class, I promise it's going to be interesting. Today we want to look at Photovoltaic Modules, and We would discuss them briefly about it.

Photovoltaic Modules

Photovoltaic modules are otherwise known as the Solar panel. Of course, that’s what So many people in my Environment call it. This Component gets Solar Power and transforms it into sustainable energy.

And the Material Used for this is mostly Silicon and the reason is that it easily generates electricity when beaten by Sun due to its light sensitivity.

For this module to give out it must be designed appropriately, by so doing, it would continue to be a reliable source of electrical Energy as Usual.

It Would also be wise to note the basic unit which is the photovoltaic cell.

These Cells are electrical devices that can convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity through the effect of photovoltaic. Its only Source of energy is the sunlight.

How Is Electricity Generated through this Means?

The process is simple and here is it; once the sunlight strikes a particular cell, what takes place next is that electrons are excited and they generate an electric current which is conveyed through some wires within the cell to an electrical circuit.

photovoltaic cells have the ability or potential to take care of a significant amount of our electrical energy daily needs.

What Really is a Module?

In this study, a module is just an assembly of different photovoltaic cells which is wired in series or parallel in other to produce the desired voltage and current by an individual, according to his loads.

For example, in batteries, when the photovoltaic cells are connected in series, the voltage is added while the current remains constant.

The same thing applies when they are connected in parallel, this time around, the current would be added whereas the voltage remains constant.

The PV cells are enclosed within the module in other to protect them from weather Conditions and other most likely environmental factors.

These panels are flat rectangular in nature and can produce anywhere from 5 watts to over 200 watts.

When a panel is wired together in a group, it is called an array.

Let’s give attention to the different components of photovoltaic module types

  • Glazing material
  • Cell material
  • Hardware, frame, and electrical connections

Different Connection types

Series Circuits

When modules are connected in a series Setting, the effect is that the voltage adds. In this case, the current remains Constant Series wiring maintains the current constant.

In the Series Circuit Connection, the connections are made from the positive (+) Unit of one module to the negative (-) Unit of another module.

Parallel Circuits

When modules are connected in parallel settings, the currents are added while the voltage stays Constant.

So, technically, in other to increase the current of a PV system, the modules must be connected in parallel.

Also, the parallel connections are made from the positive (+) Unit to the positive (+)Unit While the negative (-) Unit is Connected to the negative (-) Unit.

Series and Parallel Circuits

Interestingly PV systems can use both Series and Parallel connections in other to produce the required voltages and Currents.
