40 years old...!! Wow, how time flies..!!

My first memory of a Home Computer was the Sinclair ZX81..!!

I remember my Dad bringing it home in "kit form" to save a little money and we built it up on the dining room table.

These first Home Computers didn't come with a screen but you plugged them into your TV. I remember the days and nights me and family had playing the games. Great times..!!

At the age of 20 I remember taking my first office job after finishing my apprenticeship and on the first day I asked the receptionist why there was an unopened box in the reception with a picture of a computer on it..!!

It was an IBM XT..!!

I remember being told that it had come up from London Head Office and no one wanted to open it.

At the age of 20 I was the youngest in the office and asked if I could stop back after work and play with it.

I clearly remember the boss at the time, Don Parkinson, saying "...... sure, but you are not getting paid..!!"

I spent the next three months every night and every weekend teaching myself Lotus 1-2-3 and after three months asking Don Parkinson if I could do a presentation in the Conference Room..!!

You could imagine the situation. Me at the age of 20, 15 older surveyors, and the boss..!!

I set up the computer and challenged four surveyors to a race to price a Bill of Measured Quantities that I had already pre-programmed into Lotus 1-2-3.

I remember I brought in a massive big alarm clock with the loudest bell you had ever heard ......and set it to ONE MINUTE..!!

When I said go, before the four other surveyors had chance to get out their calculators and pens I shouted "FINISHED" and put my hand up..!!

Funny enough, 15 computers arrived the following week..!!

The rest as they say is history.

Thanks for reading and thanks for allowing me time to remember the great times in the '80's..!!

My first computer was a Commodore 64. I still have it and it still works (well, last time I had it out...it has been a while).

Soon after we got our ZX-81 my best mate at school got a Commodore 64. I was so jealous. His dad was a company director and he was spoilt with the best. I was happy with our ZX-81. I had no choice..!! ;) ;)

Great post! My first computer was a commadore 64. Upvoted and resteemed!

Awesome. Thanks. Could you imagine today waking up on Christmas day at the age of 13 and having to biuld an X-Box from scratch..!! You would think your Dad was taking the piss..!! ;) ;) Stephen
