Remembering our loved ones

In my culture in this month of August we have 10 days specially dedicated to pray for our loved ones who are no more with us. It is called a period of Muktaad. The prayers are done in the fire temple, where the rituals are performed by the priest. Normally we do these prayers for 10 to 15 years after the death of our loved one. For my father I did these prayers for 15 years and then stopped it, but nevertheless I do prayers for him at home and wish that wherever his soul is now, is in good energy space.

These rituals are very important for us, we believe that when we pray for them their soul progresses higher in the spiritual realms and if for any unfinished business their soul is not at peace then these prayers will assist the soul in finding the peace and moving forward. It's a time we dedicate for them for all that they have done for us in their life time. A way of saying thank you, also a way of seeking forgiveness and removing any resentments if we have had. It's a way to move forward at soul level.

It is one of the best scenes one can see, for every person's prayer there is a silver flower vase with flowers and the priest prays.

These 10 days are observed in silence and prayers as much as possible. I also find these 10 days as a purification process. On completion of 10 days of prayers the 11th day is the New Year, the Zoroastrian New Year which is then celebrated with lot of grandeur where family comes together and again we have quiet a few of traditions to follow here. Normally in this month I am always in Mumbai, but now I have no prayers for anyone so this year I did not decide to go. If I would had been in Mumbai and even if I had no one to pray for, I would still visit the fire temple to pay respects in general for others. We are a small community and we kind of know each other.

No one knows exactly what happens when the person dies, whether they need our prayers or not. They may progress well in their world even without our prayers, so may be these rituals are made for our own satisfaction. But still I do believe that whatever energy we send out from this world in to the soul world is received by them, and through prayers we let our loved ones know that they are being still loved and missed.
