Day 1 in Belgium - (Bruges)

in #travel7 years ago

Last September my family and I thought of being a bit adventurous such that they decided it would be rather exciting if we drive from the UK to Belgium by car.

It was journey from the Midlands to the South at Portsmouth, and then onto a ferry all the way through to France and Belgium’s border.

Throughout this journey, the biggest stress on my mind was driving on the opposite side of the road as this was something I had never experienced doing before and that too with my right hand drive car. Along with this followed the rocky English Channel which made me feel awful on the ferry so that’s when I decided to put my head down and forget I am sailing away!

What followed on was a rally of cars and trucks firing out of the ferry onto these busy roads and highways in France. For them it may have been an easy homely experience however, for us it was one of the scariest experiences being on these unknown roads and not to forget to mention going anti-clockwise on a roundabout!

Once I got hang of the roads, I managed to see so many beautiful acres of green land and once we were in the cities then that’s when I knew this was going to be a mad one!

The first day, we decided to visit the beautiful, scenic and well known city Bruges. It was our first encounter the Belgium way and we thought of parking our car and exploring this city by foot. As we walked through the cobbled streets, we saw tourists scouting around in numbers exploring the lakes, punters and authentic shops full of crafts, jewellery and chocolates!

We continued walking through the busy areas into the square of Bruges. This was my favourite spot of all as it was a beautiful square set between magnificent architecture and shops. This was definitely our photo-shoot spot where everyone had taken out every device to hand to take pictures and selfies within this square.

We carried on walking away from the square through this busy high street amongst all the shoppers and chocolate fantasies. I managed to get some time to sneak into one of the chocolate paradises and buy some the famous Belgium chocolate that everyone crazes about. I must say it exceeded all expectations and so brought some to have on the way back.

Soon later, it was evident that everyone needed to sit down and have a snack so we continued to the end of the high street to the lines of restaurants where owners were trying to welcome you in. We picked a spot outside as it was still warm to enjoy some of the sunshine and ordered what I was craving all day. Yes, it was the hot chocolate! Along with that we got some fries and few other delicacies which managed to keep us going.

Once we were done, we managed to pick a different path to walk back which was equally as beautiful as Bruges is full of its eye opening lakes, architecture and shops. We managed to get back to our parking lot and pack up again to go back to the border of France which is where we were staying for the weekend. That was the end to a tiring yet magnificent day in this weekend break!
