Costco Wholesale, Canberra
Location and Background
Costco is mainly a retailer that provides world-class service and a shopping experience, providing quality goods at low prices for businesses and individual customers. Costco is located at 39-41 Mustang Ave, MAJURA PARK ACT 2609, close to Canberra Airport.
Costco is little different from general supermarkets. Costco is a global and membership-based wholesale supermarket where anyone can shop but should have a membership mandatory for shopping here. That means customers pay an annual fee to become a member and shop at discounted prices.
Costco has its international presence in 15 countries across North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia and New Zealand.
Costco, the American retail chain, started its business in Canberra in July 2011, almost 2 months after I arrived in Australia, offering membership-based, highly discounted products, which changed the shopping strategy of Canberrans. As of September 2025, Costco operates more than 910 warehouses worldwide, with about 85% in North America.
Size and Layout
Every Costco store is large and spread over more than 8000 to 20000 square meters, and their layout is very well organized as a warehouse style. All Costco supermarkets have large and open aisles because a large crowd gathers here.
ᴺᵘᵗˢ ᵃⁿᵈ ʳᵒˡˡˢ
You will see a remarkable difference when it comes to sections in Costco. They have their own strategy with no strict category but let their customers walk through different sections. In fact, they encourage their customers to be allured into buying by displaying items in different categories, like keeping electronics and dry goods near the entrance.
They keep fresh produce and meats behind them, and cold and frozen foods are situated towards the rear to maintain freshness. Costco allots sections like pantry items, cereal, and staple food mostly in the last sections, where shoppers arrive last.
Costco's strategy is to place it in the back, so the unique smelldrifts through the store. and they keep their refrigerated and frozen foods close by in the back side, as these are the items that shoppers pick in the end to maintain the food's temperature before they reach home.
Product Variety
Costco offers mostly local items, but as not all products are manufactured in Australia, 30-40% of items are imported from America, China, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. So you can say Costco sells a blend of local and international goods.
ᶜˡᵒᵗʰᶦⁿᵍˢ
Costco maintains strict special sections that display organic, fresh produce, cosmetics, and world-class electronics products. Costco is supposed to be the most affordable, offering premium products.
They deal in all kinds of products with heavy discounts compared to other supermarkets based on membership.

Everything in fruits, vegetables, and meat comes fresh from the local suppliers, barring a few items that come packed for the benefit of people from 80 different countries living in Australia and looking for their local products, but everything has an expiry date, strict supervision, rating management, and top-class hygienic standards.
AS per my information this store sells almost 40,000 plus products so it's not possible to furnish all products' list but I will give you a few prices for your ready reference:
Item | AU$ | Steem |
---|---|---|
Kleenex Tissues | 29.40 | 120 |
Pet Food | 49.99/kg | 200 |
Beef | 22.00/kg | 88 |
Chicken | 14/kg | 56 |
Strawberries | 12/kg | 48 |
Olive oil | 18/lit | 72 |
Tomato | 4.50/kg | 18 |
Blueberries | 16/kg | 64 |
Customer Service
Australia is perhaps the most customer-friendly and helpful country in the world that keeps "customer first," following all the policies under "fair business"; therefore, only customer-friendly staff can remain in a job here.
I love how they label and provide efficient, helpful service, including smiling assistance at checkout and in the transport area. This combination creates a unique shopping experience and high customer satisfaction.
With a large number of self and manual checkout counters, the wait time is minimum, yet after the closing hours, while the customer has not yet completed the payment, it might take a little time, but even that is not too long. In this country very few buy through paper money, and the system is working on auto mode; calculations and payments are fast.
Facilities and Amenities
This store has its own petrol pump and parking right at the entrance, so it has a large parking space. The store has different spaces for trolleys to pick at the entrance and leave after the shopping is over, which the store staff maintains properly. There is a large rest area for all.
Like all the Australian stores, a good standard is followed for the elderly or disabled, allowing them to ride on their carts inside the store and providing them special parking areas close to the entrance.
A regular automatic and manual system works to keep aisles clean, and all the products are stored in a way that keeps them fresh and safe. For the general information, even the open areas have almost zero pollution, so inside an air-conditioned store, the chances of pollution or dirt are almost nil.

COVID has taught a good lesson worldwide, so all the safety measures remain in place. As a normal habit, the locals keep a 2-3 foot distance even when walking or standing indoors or outdoors, and some of them wear masks even if there are no threats. However, the regular shots of flu are mandatory in this country, which makes people safer.
To be frank, this store is almost 10 km away from my place, but when I have to buy in bulk, I go to this place or visit it with friends on weekends so we can split the items and the benefit that comes with shopping at Costco.
ᵀᵒʸˢ ᵃⁿᵈ ᴸᵘᵍᵍᵃᵍᵉ
I have several memorable experiences at Costco, which could be defined based on value through bulk buying. I remember a time when I was late at checkout, but the assistance by an employee with checkout and helping me out to my car will always remain a unique memory.
Special Note:
Costco ships and deliver at home depending on the type of order and region. For most online retail orders in Australia, the delivery fee is included in the price of the item, so the price displayed online website includes delivery.
Note: For Business Delivery, Pre-Order items, or tires the charges might differ and within a specified distance with their fixed algorithm depending what service they use like Australia Post or TGE for small items and premium delivery for large and bulky items.
